So the spec sheet doesn't include the 580m GTX but when selecting the 580m, it takes you there. Weird, someone test this out please :)

My past exp w/ Nvidia has made me wary of new drivers.

I'll wait a few days to see if anyone's gpu's melt or explode before I try this out on my *eh* 460m.

honestly why is everyone so down on the 460.. it can run most games on max details with decent fps and max details on new games at 720p in 3d.

    not terrible by any means!!

    It's not the 460m.

It's my past experience with the 196.75 driver from nvidia D:

    aye but your *eh* :)

just reading a lot of negatives about it, and during my couple of weeks with the 460, it gave me no issues and the only reason i returned it was that the price was dropped 250 the week after i bought it

Well, if u have the 460m, it'll depend on if you have the 3D or the regular 60hz 2D. That determines if you have optimus, and if you'll suffer the wrath of an irregular optimus feature.

Actually, the 460 can barely run any games at max details. Definitely not in 3d.

Balony. No issues with any of my recent games on highest settings.

Remember all you 460m haters "720p 3D is better than no 3D :p"

Just ignore the fanboi who likes to run max AA/AF for his game settings. With a 17.3" screen, you're not going to notice the difference between 2x AA/AF or 4x AA/AF.

M18x 580M sli fails to install (not recognized hardware).
I could force it by modifying the inf, but it's only a beta, so maybe I'll wait until there is a specific need.

Why do I get the message "NVIDIA installer cannot continue" when i try to install it? I use a M17xR3, my current drivers are the 267.64 from dell drivers page. I have a Nvidia 460M (The non-3d version).

For some reason I can't install ANY new drivers because I get the same message on all of them "This graphics driver could not find Compatible Hardware" when running them.

    Thanks for any assistance.

Did you modify the inf. File?

What difference in 3d mark or FRAPS performance have you noted?

I just installed the 270.50 drivers and got a 200 point improvement in 3D mark 2006 which is meaning full only in so far as it did not decrease.

BF3 alpha saw a nice pop in average fps happily and no longer get the upgrade driver error message.

Will try the non beta 280's next.

Apparently some do and some do not need .infs regarding the 280.19s but yes for the 270.50s.

Actually every single driver i've downloaded before this one has not worked, and even if I did find a modded INF I would get horrible performance.

An NVIDIA rep on their forums linked this: http://nvidiaforums.s3.amazonaws.com/dell.zip for M17x/M18x users and it works great! I got an extra 10 fps on GTA 4 with icenhancer :D

He said that the new non-beta drivers will work natively with our notebooks. Yay! Original Forum: 580m Verde Driver Download? - NVIDIA Forums

You mean you have a 460M card with 60Hz (non-3d) and it using a driver for the the 580M card worked for you?

If it did, I'll cross my fingers that it will work for me too, because the nvidia drivers from dell support are LOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUSYYYYYY to say the least.

Yes I have the 60hz non-3d. Again, I got a great performance increase..... Before that I was debating whether or not to upgrade to the 580m and spend close to $1000. But now, the 460m does everything I want it to :D

So I could probably wait awhile before upgrading

    Will try them out then!

It is strange that on Dell site these drivers are updated for the 580M but not for the 480M (still the April ones), any ideas why?

I emailed Dell on their Alienware forums twice on this same subject as thar forum is monitored by Dell support.

    A response was never provided.

I wonder and hope, based on a response on the nVidia geforce forum, that a universal unified drever is about to be released next week or so.

I say this because the nvidia rep said that the driver released after the 280.19 beta is WQHL'ed will work on the locked down Alienware ndidia cards without .inf mods.

Anyone else read it that way as linked above and/or in the 580m thread?

Additionally, this may be why Dell has been utterly lax on updating it's proprietary drivers?

Yeah well, you have the 580m...I have the 460m, and I have the same issue. From my understanding from the nvidia dude's answer, they're fixing the INF problem with the 580m, so the rest of us will still be stuck...I hope I'm wrong, though.

    Ah, right!

I'll try when I get home later today, hopefully it'll work for me too. I see that you have the 120hz monitor version (3d), which I don't, from what I heard previously they need different modded infs. I'll reply with an answer to whether it works or not later today!

The non-beta WQHL 280.19 are due next week and may want to wait to try those as apparently they will not need and .inf mod. Can always "roll back" the driver if trouble.
