Welcome to the hell that is an clean install of an SSD. I have managed to install a new windows 7 with drivers supplied through forums and I now have an issue when updating to the newest NVIDIA drivers. (works fine other than a few stutters in a few games like force unleashed 2).
When I installed the Nvidia driver it was an older version. I then updated to the latest drivers and it keeps freezing, stuttering and shutting down the game I'm playing. It says "DISPLAY DRIVER STOPPED WORKING BUT HAS NOW RECOVERED". When I regressed back to the old driver it works ok again other that the few minor stuttering issues. I then tried Drivers 285.62 and then 295.73 (older drivers but newer than the original one) and they affect the computer in the same way.
I tried setting up the laptop in many different ways shown on forums but those didn't solve it.
I wonder if there is something else that needs updating from the older install I did in order for the Nvidia card to work optimally instead of against itself.
My original thread for clean install is here http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/658307-320gb-hdd-128gb-ssd-problems.html
I also used the drivers from this thread
http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...er-install-order-guide-alienware-systems.html
Hmmm would the intel drivers need updating and if so where would I get them?
-
Try setting your bios to all defaults, I used to get this error on my gt540m but rsetting the Bios fixed it
-
looked at intel drivers all seem current... hmmmm very odd. Any other ideas on what it could be?
-
If it is an m17x r1, remember to disable the pcie gen 2 in bios under the graphics settings and the new drivers will work fine.
-
Sorrys its m17x r3. I tried default but my ssd is ahci and when it got defaulted to raid it went monkey crap. Definetly not an option thought I had screwed my laptop up then.
-
I get this error when I use the beta 300x drivers from nvidia, and a lot of the time I get BSODs.... I am told that it may be a voltage issue with the drivers, but I'm not sure.
-
Before i installed the ssd and rebuilt my m17x it worked fine. Beginning to wonder what could be causing it. Pretty sure its a conflicting component or something along those lines. Might set all to default then change ssd back to ahci and see if that does anything. Seems odd always thought NVIDIA were pretty solid.

There's nothing wrong with Nvidia. You probably need to clean out the old drivers and registry entries.
Download and install Driver Sweeper: Phyxion.net - Driver Sweeper
Download and install CCleaner Basic: Piriform - Download CCleaner, Defraggler, Recuva, Speccy - Millions of users worldwide!.
Download Nvidia 301.24 drivers (beta, but solid) to the Desktop (don't install yet): Drivers - GeForce.
Go to Start>Control Panel>Programs & Features>Uninstall a Program and uninstall all Nvidia entries (one at a time, rebooting as prompted).
Reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 at the boot screen, select "Safe Mode" from the menu). Close Internet Explorer which opens automatically to explain Safe Mode.
Run Driver Sweeper. At the opening screen, select (check) Nvidia-Display and Nvidia-PhysX and click on the Analyse button. A list of directories, files and registry entries will appear. Click the Clean button and remove the files. Do not reboot when asked.
Run CCleaner. From the left column, click on Registry. At the Registry screen, click Scan for Issues. When the issues list appears, click Fix Selected Issues (being all of them). At the popup, decide whether you wish to backup the Registry before proceeding and select accordingly (prudence dictates a backup; convenience dispenses with it). At the next popup, click Fix All Selected Issues. When it reports Issues Fixed, repeat Scan For Issues and follow the same process, fixing any issues found. Repeat until no issues are found after scan. Exit and reboot into Windows (normal mode).
Install the 310.24 drivers. Select Custom Install and select (check) only the Graphics Driver and PhysX System Software. Uncheck the rest. (Do not select Clean Installation if you have customized any settings in Nvidia Control Center.)
Reboot and test.
If that doesn't resolve the issue, download and install the most recent drivers for the Intel HD3000 IGP. http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...emium, 64-bit version*&DownloadType= Drivers .
If the problem persists, you probably need to try disabling the IGP/Optimus and running the 560M alone. But we can cross that bridge when we come to it. Good luck. -
Yet again revelator you are guiding me through harsh waters. You truely are a glitton for punishment. Gawd bless ya mate

How goes it, Gogul1?
-
gogul1, sad that until now you are still having problems with your ssd upgrade.. on one of your previous thread i mentioned i too upgraded to a ssd drive.. originally had a 750gb 7200rpm hdd and i upgraded to a samsung 830 series 256 ssd.. originally did a clean install but forgot to download some drivers so i decided to use the norton ghost 15 that came with it and did a clone.. i also upgraded the nvidia drivers 296.10.. my laptop has performed flawless (knock on wood).. only thing i added was the "system mechanic" software for $40 and it found a couple of problems but it analyzed and repaired all issues.. it fixed all problems in my registry..

Ok drivers seem to work except for the fact I have no sound now. Also I can connect to the internet but the little logo in the bottom right hand corner permanently has an X on it even though when I click on it it says connected. The speaker in the bottom hand corner also has a red X and when I click on it it says the drivers have been disabled. I then go to device/drivers highlight the IDT driver option and it says it is already enabled. I click on troubleshoot and it basically says... "Damned if I know"
I seriously recommend never updating to an SSD unless you buy the computer pre installed with one. It has given me nothing but headaches. The money and time it has wasted has not been given back with booting speed etc. Hopefully once this is all done I will have learned my lesson well and never try anything like this again. You have been warned. -

If the red indicator is on the speaker icon, it just means that you have muted the speakers. Click on the icon, then click on the small speaker icon on the popup screen. That should clear the indicator and resolve the issue. If it does not, right click on the speaker icon, select Playback device and set Speakers/Headphones as your default device.
-
Nope, I have tried all of those and tried reinstalling the drivers but no luck still muted.
-
Also any idea on why the wifi indicator has a red cross?
-
Went to services.msc and a lot of the audio are set at automatic and say (started) is that good or bad?
-
I restarted them and still troubleshooter says its disabled. Really annoyed now as I think I have tried everything I can think of. That driver sweeper must have done something pretty messed up to get this error.
-
When I hover cursor over the speaker it says no audio output installed.
-
Uninstalled idt hd audio codec and then reinstalled latest version... Nothing.
-
Ok found idt audio control panel, all settings are at 0 and when I try and change anything the program stops working and shuts down. Could this be the problem?
-
Also, when I got to control panel/sound I try to adjust system volume and it says no audio device is installed... Im very lost now.
-
I know for a fact the speakers do work as before i did the driver cleaner and installed the new drivers I had sound. very odd.
-
Please god tell me that I can fix this witout uninstalling the graphics driver again, I did it so much I'm so tired of doing it. It's so lame!
-
WHY IS THERE AN X ON MY WIFI LOGO AND SPEAKER? Beginning to get really ticked off with this, what a mistake it was to upgrade to SSD. Biggest and worst mistake I have made in ages.
-
Went into bios and hd audio is enabled so not that either. Nvidia control panel has no issues either.
-
Under sound, video and game controllers I have: Bluetooth hands free audio, idt high definition codec and intel(R) display audio.
Is that right? -
Still saying audio device is disable under troubleshooting audio. Any ideas as to why this is happening. I go into the sound settings have speakers/headphones as default and when I double click on it the option at bottom is device usage: use this device (enabled) is shown. Does this mean it's enabled?
-
Still saying audio device is disabled any ideas as to why it still says this? It won't fix the problem either. Please please please help I have tried everything and do need somebody with some knowledge now. Why won't it fix it? Where is this mysterious setting I can't find?
-
Idt codec is working properly and is enabled apparently. Where is it saying its disabled?
-
When I went into driver sweeper I saw Realtek sound and there are Realtek sound registrys in hkey local machine folder. Is this anything?
-
can you try reinstalling windows? MIGHT help, this time don't use any driver software like drier sweeper or anything
-
I have just finished installing all my games, putting game saves in the right place etc To do that will take days again due to having to reinstall WoW etc
-
Ok managed to rollback the laptop and tried to reinstall the nvidia beta driver. Now I get the physx not installing and the graphics card still temporarily stop working. I installed the latest hd dell driver but still no luck. Very odd.

Use this guide and install 296.10
http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/659378-nvidia-drivers-clean-install.html -
The 296.10 drivers started all this by making the games freeze and then shutting down. I will try a clean install of 296.10 again but I get the feeling it might just carry on. Will let you know how it goes.
-
Ok finally finished and it seems to work with 296.10. Luckily the laptop rolled back far enough and I could adjust all my settings to ensure it did not happen again. Ahhh I have only one small problem now and will look into it to see if its actually an issue.
-
right mostly done except for an error when i try to shut down that says and error occured cannot shut down due to program preventing it.
Pop up screen then shows a red X with the following info
The instruction at 0x3fdb2119 reference memory at 0xffffffff
the memoey could not be read.
Click on OK to terminate program
intel proset/wireless _:ifrmewrk.exe application error
Any ideas on what this could be? -
Totally sorted now updated to latest proset drivers

I am having the black screen issue also after installing a Samsung 830 128GB SSD. I have a GeForce GTX560Ti, MSI P67A-C43(B3) motherboard, a 1.0 TB WD Caviar Black and a Seagate 3.0TB drive. Before upgrading to the SSD, I had the WD Black as my only hard drive. I did a clean install of Windows 7 Pro on the 830 set to AHCI in the BIOS. Installing the OS, drivers, and SSD tweaks went smoothly. I even installed the NVIDIA graphics driver with no problem. The black screen however, started to happen when I was formatting the WD black drive using the hard disk tool in Windows 7 after formatting and partitioning it with Windows 7 OS CD. While formatting the WD Black using the Windows 7 tool, the computer froze and reboot itself. Since then, whenever I boot it up the screen goes black when you're supposed to enter the Windows password. I uninstalled the nvidia graphics driver and it boots up well. Both the Seagate, which intend to use as a storage drive, and the WD Black, which I intend to install most of my programs and all my games on are plugged into the SATA II ports and the Samsung SSD is the only drive plugged into the SATA III port. How can I fix this? I tried doing all of the steps above. It did not work.
