Thanks for your response to my earlier post, and I apologize for not including this question in that thread. Can a 2820QM be overclocked in the bios in the r3, I'm pretty sure ThrottleStop only works on XM cpu's. Would you be able to get a 2920XM in the r3 and overclock with T.S.? I seem to remember somewhere that the 2920 can't be o'cd in the r3 bios. Thank you

No bios support for the 2920XM so no OC options.

    What he said ^^^^

I have an ES version of the 2920XM, so not exactly the same, but still without proper BIOS support there is no way to mess around with it.

Isnt there a way to load the M18x bios. Maybe soldering the bios chip from a M18x onto the M17x motherboard??

Who is willing to try. :p

So the 2820QM can't be overclocked in r3 bios?

The 2820QM can't be overclocked anyway, except for a little increase of the baseclock, which is possible in the r3 BIOS. This means instead of 100 MHz baseclock you can go to 104-105 MHz, maybe a bit more if you're lucky.
But you can't adjust the multiplier, it's locked in the non-XM CPUs.

2920xm only Sandy Bridge CPU which let's you go crazy with the multis, but only as long as the BIOS allows it. The standard M17x r3 BIOS won't allow this, you need a modded M18x version to get this working.

TBH I'd be happy just forcing it to stay at the turbo multi. Throw in the ability to undervolt and I'm set.

undervolting will never happen, Sandy bridge wasn't designed to work like Core 2 or Nehalem. Its constantly dynamically micromanaged , and we have no way of messing with it. You can download throttlestop, and force it to turbo all the time, but thats as far as you will get, unless somebody hacks the m17xr3 bios properly allowing us to mess with the 2920xm multipliers.

It can be overclocked, but only by 3% on average, anymore and expect stability problems. Heck even at 1-3% overclock its far from stable.

With no reasonable overclock obtainable, I went for a low performance profile instead using throttlestop when not needing high power of the CPU, this is good for RDP where another machine does the work or even if you just want to surf the net on the couch using nice large keyboard and screen of the M17. Just set a low mutli and enjoy no fan noise (it will stay in an off state), you will get 30-45 extra battery :)

I do it on my 2600k ;) And overclocked at the same time. The values the CPU picks a lot of time are way over what it needs.

There's supposed to be a new bios that allows for 2920xm usage in the R3, it's basically a M18x bios that was modded and ported for use on the R3. I used it but only have a 2820qm so it didn't allow me to do anything else any of you guys that have the 2920xm may want to try it. It was a bit buggy but nothing more than an ocasional lag, no problems at all that would cause concern though. It's can be located here:
M17x r3 unlocked BIOS for 2920xm overclocking [BIOS works, untested with XM CPU]

I know this is an old post but I would like to know how to go about doing this on a A08 bios. Locking the cores at turbo etc. Whatever I can do with a 2820qm. Any help is appreciated. :)

I can overclock my 2960XM using Intel XTU. It allows you to set multipliers at whatever you want.I usually keep it at 42x4 except when running 3DMark06 then I set it to 45x4.

I know this is an old thread...

you can't really overclock the 2820 much (as others have stated)...only maybe 4-5% max via a bclk increase.

However, you can keep your turbo high forever via some tweaks by increasing your max turbo tdp via XTU. This results in a 400-500mhz bump for me
