Is getting a 2920XM in an M17X r3 a waste of money or do you think some time in the future there will be a way to get the full potential from this cpu?

There's a modified BIOS which should allow you to fully control the 2920xm, though so far it has only been tested with non-extreme CPUs (for which the overclocking menu isn't available)
    See here.

DaneGRClose tested the BIOS, it's not corrupted, you can't loose anything by flashing it. Just test it once you have it, and in case everything works as described you'll have the fastest M17x r3 on the whole planet.

No, I'm happy with the performance of my M15x, I don't have money for a new system at the moment. Though a M17x r3 with 2920xm is really tempting... :D

Yeah, you can only get an M17X r3 with a 2920XM from HIDevolution. Or eBay I guess. Wouldn't you need a different heatsink though? Dual pipe?

No, the M17x r3 comes with dual piped heatsink, there's only one model in the r3. Check out the pics of Dane's repasting guide. But repasting will help if you start overclocking the 2920xm.

Would you need a 3 pipe heatsink with the 2920? I see the GPU comes with one

The 2920xm heatsink of the M18x has only 2 heatpipes as well, there's no 3 heatpipe heatsink available anyway. The 2920xm has the same TDP as the 940xm, and the M15x has only two heatpipes as well, so the heat-management is probably similar.

There's a M17x R3 with a ES 2920xm owner around here but i never heard anything from him.

Yeah, he said he'll flash the BIOS as soon as someone else with a 2920xm has done it... LOL.

Count me as the guinea pig.. Not saying I'm going to run it 24/7 though one person mentioned it glitches a lot though they did not have a 2920xm. Should have some kind of results next week. If it works I may try to mod a newer m18x BIOS.

Installed the ES 2920xm. Tried the m18x BIOS and there were no multi settings in the BIOS. Also ran throttlestop and it did nothing.

BTW I checked the pics in that thread and there was an option "Non-Turbo Flex Support" that was disabled for them but enabled for me. It even lets me set it to extreme CPU there when enabled. I tried that and it didn't give me any other menu options.
