Now with the R3 out I'm wondering how far you can pimp a R2?
Can it use the newer processor's? I see there's new i7 out.
I think it can take the WD 1TB drives.
Can it take the new AMD video cards? Has anyone tried yet?

Or is better off to just sell off R2 and pick up already beefy R3?

For the rig in your signature?

    920XM: $410 on eBay.
8GB RAM kit: Starting at about $80.
    SSD: 120GB for about $240
1TB secondary HDD: $100. Yes, it does fit the R2.

The second generation i7 CPUs won't work in the R2.

As for the R2 taking the newer GPUs, I think its speculation until someone gets the balls to buy one and try it. I may be wrong. I would not consider the R3 to be 'beefy'. My opinion, of course.

I hope we could use newer gpus. Maybe dell might add the option to the bios and sell them to us.

Unfortunately, the SB processors require an entirely new board. And as with all new things, the layout will likely be different, thereby not allowing you to put the new board into your R2, which can reasonably be assumed since the R2 and R3 have different physical dimensions.

Think like this... for example 3dmark 2011 wich could be and indicator of what we can expect from future games. My modest (not maxed not "pimped") R2 pulls almost 3x the score of a currently "pimped" R3...

As it is now with a single vid card the R3 is addressing another segment of the marked (where laptop like asus G73 belongs to)

Still the R2 for gaming is the better choise

Wow I had no idea, I just assumed, and made out of me and u :p that the R3 was a big beefy replacement for a R2. Looks like I will be be doing some of the upgrades listed by TurboTalon instead of thnking about the R3.

It's nice to know my several month old R2 still throw a good punch!

The R2 combined with a 920/940 XM is a powerful machine for sure.

IMO the R2 is a better system than the R3. Thats my opinion, based on my needs. R3 isn't bad, just not what I want. The R2's dual GPU's provide better gaming performance. Throttle stop and XM cpu pack a good punch, I like the R2 looks much better, and you can get a USB 3.0 card for the R2 as well. I pimped out my R2 and it should last several years, but was pretty disappointed with the R3 since it's not a dual GPU, and doesn't have a nice RGB screen. To me 3D is gimicky and dpesn't appeal to me.

Meh. More like I can keep my drink cold on the sleek casing that is damn near ice cold when you first touch it to turn it on as this thing's cooling is top notch with some of the best case design on the market.

That is really bad. I have the Space Black version, and it never gets that bad. It looks like that guy ate an order of french fries and then played patty cake with his laptop. Not to mention that the light (or camera flash) just amplifies the effect. Plus, that's what Windex is for. :D

Worse still, as I understand it, that was the photo he used to sell the machine "brand new" on eBay!

Couldn't even be bothered to wipe the darn thing down. It's hard enough to fetch the price you're wanting for a laptop these days as it is.
