    I have an alienware M17xR4.

    [core i7-3740QM, 8 gb ram, 2 gb nvidia 675M, 3d display]

    Bios-A12
Recently i started facing an issue with the adapter, when i plug it in an error message saying "plugged in but not charging, please connect the proper adapter" appears on the screen.
The rubber coating at the end of the cord is torn which makes the inner wires visible (the inner wire coatings are coming off as well) . Generally, wriggling the cord fixed the issue.I thought the adapter is almost dead. But,if there is an issue with the adapter, the laptop shouldn't even say plugged in.
Please let me know the exact issue. If the fault lies in the adapter and it needs to be replaced let me know the approximate cost in INR.

Yes it is an adapter failure. Basically there is a wire in there that sends a signal to the laptop indicating it is an authorized adapter and lets the laptop run at full power and charge. This wire is getting a bad connection and not always working so you get the adapter not recognized warning and basically it will get worse until wiggling it does not fix it anymore.

You can get adapters through Ebay, Amazon and a few other online retailers and price seems to vary depending on where you go. Just make sure you get the right adapter for your model, search for the part number and get one that works with your model. Alienware / Dell laptop adapters have a chip in them that the laptop reads and if it does not find said chip you get the warning message and your laptop will run like a slug.

The part where the cord comes out of the adapter to go in to the laptop seems to be a weak spot, there are lots of issues with it failing right there, just be careful when you are packing it up or storing the cord not to wind it super tight and put pressure on that particular joint.

dont you think the problem is with the part that goes into the laptop (the one with the light)? If i call up dell and ask them for a replacement, will it cost me lesser (sorry, today is a sunday so i cant call)?
BTW my laptop is out of warranty.

I find most of the time the problem for me anyway's is coming from the end right as it leaves the adapter, where it has the thicker rubber right as it comes out of the brick but that isn't to say it couldn't happen at another point. I am finding what happens is I unplug the adapter while it is still hot and I was wrapping the excess cord around the brick and it was actually pulling the cover that goes around the cables out of the brick I presume due to the fact that it was still warm and easily manipulated.

You can def try calling Dell/Alienware but I would think they are probably going to be more expensive then after market but by all means give them a shout, it never hurts to ask :)
