ive got a feeling its just the m18x, the speakers on the m17x r3 seem to stress very easily.

I find the speaker sound pretty good for a laptop. Of course there's the small rattling coming from the left speaker that a lot of people experience but that's not the speakers fault, more like a bad design.

Maybe it is good, I got no ratling, and virtually ZERO bass. That just about kills it for me. On a side note I do come from a Qosmio Toshiba. One thing I will give to a Qosmio is the AMAZING stock quality sound :). So maybe I was just disappointed that it didn't match the stock sound or even come close to my old Qosmio

No, no sub. What I do is I just turn up the bass enhancer on the IDT control panel to full. I don't think it affects anything else. Sounds better to me.

ya, i'm a little disappointed to. Came from an ASUS g73 which had Creative Trustudio. It was better than the crappy dell audio. However, i've fixed it since via USB SB X-fi sound :D

Is there any good usb speakers though? I've only heard of usb headsets w/ their own soundcards.

The only usb speakers i've seen are cheapo units that don't come with their own soundcards.

i can hook up regular speakers via my usb sound card.

Well that's completely dumb :S If anything they should make USB speakers, not headset xD cause headset you usually use with your ipod and stuff like that... Speakers on the other end for my personal use is definately limited to computer.
    What's the big advantage anyway?

USB headsets come with their own sound cards. For example, my USB headset came with a Sound Blaster X-fi sound card that is significantly better than the stock dell audio. Also, for gaming, these headsets often do virtual 5.1, 7.1 etc. So you can hear enemies in a 360 degree environment. This is simulated better on my X-fi compared to what the dell audio can produce

Didn't know all that, this now seems like an interesting choice in deed :). But I still don't regret for a single second to have my uber bose headset... I can tell you it makes your airplane ride...... well :D QUITE !!!!!!
Not cancelling completely the noise of engines, but its simply amazing how much of it it does cancel. For example with their own headset for the movies I would need the sound set up to 90-95% to be able to hear the quiete non-action paste momments... with bose ==> 45-50% xD
And the quality for my laptop use (I am no professional gamer) is very satisfying :).
EDIT: I think I would have to try one to be able to make a better judgement anyway :) But let's face it I won't xD !!!

Bose is an exception. That is one brand that has exceptionally high quality when it comes to most audio peripherals.

The BOSE are ok, look at goldring ns1000, regarded better than bose at 1/2 the price.

I ordered the mrs a xps 15 at the same time as my alienware and the JBL sound on her laptop is by far the best laptop sound i have ever heard.

I think toshiba's harmon/kardons are the best i've ever heard on a laptop (my 3 year old P305 has better sound than my m17xr3 -__-) , but m17xr3 is pretty good compared to what else is standard on other laptops.

You know, putting a "subwoofer" inside a laptop case seems like an ubsurd idea. Subs need a volume of air to force the bass through and a well designed case to let the sound resonate. I dont think either of those things will happen inside of a laptop case.

Buy a high quality headset, I know that Bose is usually an excellent company with great products...

And lastly, besides the silly "subwoofer", are the speakers in the r3/m18x similar to the R2? Because I think the speakers in the R2 are excellent.

Actually btw, I seem to remember while looking for my nvidia drivers that I came upon a DELL message saying m17x r3 and m18x share the same hardware. Thus same speakers quality. (For that hardware available in a m17x R3, you will be able to get the very same in a m18x, obviously not the other way around). Since you can't select different speakers I would assume that the m18x has the same "poor" (Well not poor, just almost completely depriving bass) sound quality.
So I was wrong cause I didn't see he was talking about the m18x, but my comment end up being relevent still xD (Lucky!)

You're wrong, my last toshiba had excelent stock sound quality. Ok you couldn't put it too loud (and also above 90% started being poor quality bass)but there it was for a non-blasting use it was extremely surprisingly good :)
They just got to do their thing right! I could have gone without external speakers with the qosmio, the same could not be said for the m17x r3.
    Still prefer my alienware though.

I guess this is possible. I am used to a "subwoofer" being of the $500 Paradigm home theater variety and dont really see the point of a tiny 3 inch "subwoofer" crammed in a laptop. But hey, to each their own...if you thought it sounded good thats all that matters right??
