    i know the m17 r2 supports sata III, but does it actually take advantage of the 6gb transfer rate? or just default to 3gb? i ask since theres a considerable price difference

    No, it doesn't. It only operates at SATA II speeds. You can use a SATA III SSD in it, but your only going to get SATA II speeds because thats all the system is capable of.
