    Has anyone done the swap?

Do all the ports line up?

    Any mods needed?

No mods are needed, both M17x and M17x R2 have the same chassis.

I swapped them when I painted them.

I never bothered to call dell about buying a motherboard for a r2...but seeing as dell's prices are ubsurd on parts, is this even worth it? Unless you already have both machines and want to put the motherboard from one into the other for some reason?

You can buy R2 motherboards off ebay for ~$300.

if you want an i7, your gonna need to do a complete motherboard swap so its compatible as talked about in the posts above me. Would take some time and effort to do properly. :)

Other than a I7 chip and the motherboard, you'll need:
-the middle magnesium alloy plate, it is not the same between the two, screw holes position is.
    -The CPU heatsink from a M17x R2.
-Probably the M17x R2 'daughter' card, the one with the sound card, laptop's left USB ports etc.
-Other video cards, the 260M won't SLi in the R2.

    Choose between:
    AMD 4870/5870/6970/6990 single and crossfire
nVIDIA 280M (flashed with Dell 285M vBIOS)/285M/580M single and SLi
nVIDIA 460M/560M only single due to missing SLi certification and possibly only with an external monitor in the 560M's case.

I think I didn't miss anything so now it's up to you to decide if the upgrade it's worth it or you'll be better off selling it and buying a M17x R2.

Ya it would be easier selling R1 and buying R2 if you wanted. There a couple R2 part out threads in Marketplace..

As katalin stated, the R2 board and support 6990M Crossfire and 580M SLI, just don't know if you want to invest that much in your laptop..

Single will work, even two but not in SLi without some workarounds.
