There's not much you can do. If you have the 3d package then you're going to bsod. The only solution for nvidia based bsod seems to be using modified desktop drivers, which you can find at laptopvideo2go.com
Oh yeah, using them voids your warranty (so don't tell anyone at dell and uninstall them before tech visit/sending laptop back to them/whatever)

don't know mate lol but I do know that MSW 7 is not as stable as some here would like to believe, I think SP1 may go some way to solving some of these issues if you manage to actually get it installed lol, I believe it not only effects SP1 update process but updates to any software or drivers in the system including games etc.

I have the 6970. What does the 6970 have to do with BSODs during windowsupdate/BFBC2 updating anyway?

if you read as much of this forum as I have you will have noticed people getting bsods while updateing games etc, it seems to be a general s/w/update issue with W7

now for those that are reading this thread and are worried, I recommend you do a google search including this - windows 7 bsods - all will be reveiled lol, these problems are not specific to Dell or Alienware or R3

from what I read, delete all unused language packs before updating W7?

    Is this it?

Well its really hard to point the finger at any one thing, a few people had issues playing games, some with updates, and in my case, just plain idling. I've only had one bsod so far, and the circumstances are vague enough that I can't viably reproduce it. In my time computing, the bsods i've tracked down and fixed were reoccuring issues. The one I experienced on my r3 just leaves me scratching my head, no real way to see it again as far as i can tell. hopefully im in the clear from now on.

Yeah I'm not sure what to do about it, its not really documented online at all. All drivers here are up to date, no language packs, no OC or any funny business.

Its only happened once, but if it happens again I'll contact Dell.

I still blame MSW 7, we have nvidia bsods AMD bsods just my humble opinion, and if you have installed or tried to install SSD or other stuff it just complicates the whole thing, it just seems to me we have bsods whether you have 3D or none 3D ATI or nvidia plus may I add - a ;ot of you guys are modding stuff out of the box, reinstalling OS etc, I could be totally wrong but I have an opinion and I'm just shareing

Dang, why does it bsod when clean installing? Is it a ssd-exclusive problem? Or will I have it too if I decide to clean install on a regular hdd?

Well if it makes you feel better I can tell you that on my brand new PC I had 3 BSOD last night after testing drivers for the GTX580.
I wouldn't blame the hardware so fast. Windows 7 is relatively new and maybe a few applications/drivers could be the problem.
I remember when Windows XP first came out everyone was complaining but eventually it became one of windows most stable OS.
This is what we get for buying the latest and greatest.
What I would like to know is how many of the people experiencing BSOD are running the R3 on a clean install. I am sure Dell tested this machines extensively before releasing them on the market (at least I hope). If you did a clean install it could be some of the drivers you downloaded causing this problems.
I am sorry to say this but I use my PC's for fun/gaming and my Mac Pro for everything else=)
To the posters that said that when they have anything plugged into the USB 2.0 port it causes the R3 to BSOD I would call Dell ASAP and have them take a look at that.

agree 100%, I have already mentioned serveral times on this thread that MSW 7 is not stable, even when updateing to service pack 1 there are bsod issues admitted by MS, SP1 probably goes some way to improving things but you have to do some things like uninstal language packs to get it to install lol

this may also cause bsods when updating any software including games and even Antivirus programs that generally run in the background

I have had at least 3 system crashes while trying to install some of the 50 odd steam games I own. Each time it's happened I've clicked install, walked away while it prepared it, and then come running back as I heard the fans revving up for the reboot. I have the 6970 and have installed sp1. Has any one else had this problem? Do you think that this just a windows 7 problem?

I'm not sure what to think. It happened twice when I first got the machine but its been a month now and nothing's happened. The crash dumps aren't very informative either.

Got bsod after trying to install nvidia display driver( using vertex 3). I tried both versions the dell cd ad the latest version form dell's site. The nvidia hd audio driver and physx system work without problem only the display and 3d driver keep failing.

    Any solution here?
