You will more then likely get an M18x for that system considering what you paid and specs.

what they will try to do is offer you a modern R3 with like a 6990m in it. Price wise, you lose out huge. Performance wise...a 6990m destroys 4870m x 2

As far as I know, they're at least obligated, if not, required, to give you the same warranty you had previously, so I'd definitely push for accidental damage.

Try for an SSD, if only to get some money which you can then spend on a big mechanical drive, and if/when they say no to that, push for a big mechanical (or two).

Maybe 8GB of RAM? I've hit the 4+ mark running a couple of Minecraft servers/clients simultaneously.

Should go for a m18x. You had a dual gpu system, you should get nothing less.

i just priced out that system on dell.co.uk comes to £1,958.99

your previous system cost you £3500?

So like i said, you will lose money wise.

However, you are getting a brand new computer with near top of the line Intel Core i7 2860 sandy bridge and top of the line AMD 6990m

i'd take it in a heartbeat. They will try and match what you had performance wise. You can try and convince them to get you the m18x with crossfire setup but it will be tough.

You just got a free upgrade, i'd take it

    things i can think of

rep system has win7 premium not ultimate
rep system has plastic finish not anodised alumium.
rep system has lcd screen not LED
rep system has single gpu not dual crossfire.
rep systems is 1/3 less price!

rep system has 2.5ghz cpu current one is 2.0ghz! +plus point!

    m18 seems natural replacement

how ever im intrested maybe in the nvidia and the 3d screen ?? compromise in the making or M18 all the way?

how old is your R2? If its relatively new, you could probably make the argument for the m18x. If its 2 yrs, they probably won't bite. I believe the policy is a replacement of similar performance, not value.

ya and you lose on that nice screen too. Dell doesn't make that screen anymore unfortunately

but i'd definitely fight for the M18. Worse they can say is no. Or get them to throw in some expensive freebies like the 580 or extended warranties etc to try to make up for the price difference?

3D I hear is nice though.

    1) you should get the same operating system. this should be a non issue since dell gets them from microsoft virtually for free.

    2) i would agree here, but there isnt much to be done/

3)the screen is LED ba believe its not RGB however. nothing will ever compare to the RGB screen in the R2 but the screen in the R3 isn't that bad. the 120hz 3d isnt worth it IMO, the 3d thing is a gimmick, and isnt worth fighting over

4)your Cpu was the top of the line xtreme processor, while the SB chips are faster clock for clock you will not be able to overclock or tweak your cpu. you should be getting at the very least the 2920XM if you have the 920XM
this should be your biggest sticking point with them, i would not except anything less if they wont do that then fight for the m18x with slightly lower specs

i completely agree with you. These laptops don't have enough juice to run 3d properly since nvidia has to render the same frame twice for 3d. Your game will run like a turtle

Oww..nooo Dell will not refund you for your original system. Its not your fault Dell sends out crappy systems that needs to be replaced.

Fight for that M18x!! With 6990m CF or 580m SLI!

you should ask for the intell 6300 wifi , cause the one on your spec is not compatible with 5hz frequencies, like me i have a top end router wich offers 2.4 and 5 hz frequencies that will give you better spees online and security , but this is just my opinion, also you should push for the 8GB ram
4Gb is very low these days , specialy like you said you do Film

I couldn’t push for anything more as I have in the past exhausted the full escalation process.

For those who have graced this forum for many years will remember the issues Dell had with Nvidia graphics cards through the Inspiron and XPS lines and the issues with the R1.

My relations with dell go back maybe 10 years and in that time I have had multiple laptops.

    These are the ones I can remember Dell Inspiron 9100, 9400, E1705, 2 x XPS 1710, XPS 1730, studio 1735, 2 x Alienware M17 r1, 2 x M17 r2

Out of those 11 laptops every one of them was faulty!
    Normally NVidia card dying!

Have purchased 4 the rest were replacements.

I have had a really bad run of problems that you just couldn’t make up and have had my fill with it, I lost the will to complain!

This system was an unsolicited offer from tech support after a couple of visits from an engineer the computer went from intermittent fault to brick.

All I want now is a system that works; History is not on my side.

    Excellent machine.

RAM upgrade is relatively cheap at this point as well as easy to perform.

I had many of those machines you listed as well as a few others such as the original xps which had the 3.4 extreme desktop cpu. Dell has had quite a few problems with nvidia, heat dissipation. I can't remember how many times graphics cards would just fry themselves. Or having a tech come out replace a part and the system just not boot up.

I too would just like a sytem that works, I want to use it, not troubleshoot it lol.
