My m17x will randomly start to flicker like crazy when attached through HDMI to my LCD TV. It happens 1 out of 10 times when trying to connect. Have any of you guys experienced this before?

Yes, I am experiencing the same exact thing, but I'd say it happens like 1 in 3 times. I have nearly identical setup as you, and have never had this problem until I installed the 10.7a beta drivers. I've since tried going back to the dell stock drivers, but the problem remains.

Heh, this is actually a different type of flickering than what I've read about the 5870's. My entire screen blacks out, the HDMI losses connection completely from the TV.

I just replaced my HDMI cable and it hasn't done it yet, I'll report back if and when it "does it".

One thing I've noticed is that many performance issue (including the ones with external display) are due to power management and stuff like Stealth Mode.

I also had problem watching movies (with HD sound) when stealth mode was enable or not... the behavior of this laptop is weird but I tried to understand it. Here are a view points to check:
    1) stealth mode status (there is a small utility very usefull on this forum for that, try a search with stealth mode - i'll try to post this once I find it again cause I forgot where it is posted).
    2) PowerPlay option in ATI CC => depend of the power mode used, check that you have selected best performance and not best Battery (I messed up with it without knowing, then I figured my laptop was running to save battery life even when plugged)

What I think is ATI sucks at managing external display (my nVidia 8800M was doing great on my previous laptop)
