VLC should not harm your speakers in any way.... that being said if you use the in program audio booster, it can and will make your speakers sound like crap as it increases the volume of the file being played above the maximum sound output of the system basically making it louder then it was ever intended to be. If your using your mouse wheel or dragging the volume slider past 100% I would suggest turning it back down to 100% and seeing if the problem persists. Also is it everything you play that is distorting or just one thing consistently? You could have a bad file that just has some bad audio tracks perhaps?

Also maybe see this thread.... http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware/703521-laptop-audio-system-do-you-prefer-jbl-klipsch.html and scroll down to the 10th post I think it is? try those settings, although you may have to tweak them a bit. I found that adjusting and playing with the EQ settings on the R4 made a world of difference. To the point where if I formatted and reloaded the system I couldn't stand the sound until I messed with the EQ settings again.

If none of this helps then perhaps there is a problem with the sound card? Have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the creative drivers and software?

i never increase the volume beyond 100 in vlc and yes the problem occurs with many songs and movies.it isnt distorted for the entire duration,it occurs at particular tones/frequencies of sound.
