Like the title says, I been thinking of buying an Alienware R3 from Ebay which they come out to around $1500 and then upgrading the graphics card to 7970M but it would most likely come out to $1700-1800 from the upgrades which got me thinking i might as-well just buy a new one from dell and i would most likely have to find someone to do the card switch since i've never done anything like that before on a laptop and fear messing up.

if you're going to get a m17x new, get it with the 7970m in it...or are you talking a refurb?

if you are set on having the 7970, which you should be. Just buy the new R4

as you are talking about buyin an R3 and putting a 7970 in... you might save a few bucks over new but you won't have warranty on the card and system together (unless you buy from dell)
you wont get the new features of the r4 like USB 3.0 on all ports and better bluetooth

IMO save the headaches and buy new like you are saying. Card swap is easy but you wont save much money
