my laptop likes to drop the connection to certain usb hdds like toshiba & western digital, not all the time but it's happened when i've been playing a video off one and it stops and the drive has been ejected....or the drive doesn't show up in my computer till i do a restart.

anyway, after trying various drivers and cables i finally found the solution, unlikely it is but it worked on my desktop.

I installed the amd usb filter driver (it shows up as installed on all usb hubs in device manager) and the drives that used to play up now connect just fine.

if you are using windows 8.1 you can get a modified inf and install the intel drivers (not sure if that made any difference but i installed them anyway).

i used the latest system files from the series 8/9 driver and they work on series 7 chipset.

my left side port wouldn't let me copy files to my toshiba usb 3 hdd but now it does.

make of it what you want, i read about m17x r4 usb issues, so this might be of interest to some.
