The touchpad that my R1 came with is like in your 2nd picture(a little deeper than the rest).

My R2's touchpad is flush with the rest of the palmrest as well. I had to buy a piece of cloth from my local arts/crafts store to stop the scuffing.

Maybe there's a reff. number on the backside of the palmrests different for each type that we can compare. Might help other users that are in the same situation and don't want having a cloth there!
I'll look at mine when i'll have some time to take it off.

I have the same problem except mine is because the panel is slightly warped. It has been like that since the day I got it. Do you think I can call dell and get this fixed even though I have had it like that for nearly 7 months?

I called alienware requesting a new palmrest and they send me one next business day. This is an issue that is covered by the warranty, i don't see why not. Besides, is annoying to put a piece of cloth every time you close the screen ;)

The average user would have no issues with the palmrest scuffing the screen. My laptop travels almost daily. With all the other junk in my backpack, it gets a bit compressed. My R1 got some pretty nasty scuffs on it before I figured out it needed some cloth sandwiched in there.

Yeah this is not a unique problem lot of my friends get it with there m15x and I know that after a while you can see them on the R2's. If you are a gamer with a gaming mouse buy one of those large thin mouse mats from razer or steelseries they are great product and add as a mouse mat!

For the mostpart my screen is only scuffef up by the upper left hand corner of my touchpad, but it is also warped in that area too. It came like that and didnt start bothering me until I started teking my laptop everywhere and it started scuffing up the screen.

    Edit:
I called dell yesterday and they wouldnt give me a new palmrest. Any help here?
