Is there any way to turn the screen off? Sometimes I like to leave some tasks running on it but would like to turn the screen off. I know some notebooks have a function key to turn the lcd off or on like the asus G16 I used to own. Is there any way of getting that kind of functionality either through software or another method?

I'm not to sure if there is a button to turn it off instantly.
However you can set it to turn off after 1 min in the power settings. I know it may sound a bit drastic but what you can do is set for example another power profile or use balanced or power saving.
Change and set all the settings the same as your high performance mode one. However change the screen to turn off to 1min in one of them. So when you want to leave the comp on for running tasks while your away simply switch to that power profile and it will turn off the screen after 1min for you.
Of course if there is a way to turn off the screen using keys on the keyboard or something then that would be easier and better. However the power profiles setting is not to bad once you have it setup as well.

Ten second Google search: turn laptop screen off - Google Search leads to this: How To Manually Turn Off Notebook or Laptop LCD Screen | Raymond.CC Blog which gives you a link to the ZIP file: http://www.redmondpie.com/downloadscenter/TurnOffLCDv101.zip which I've been using for a few years and have had no issue using.
I just use AutoHotKey to bind it to Ctrl + Alt + Windows Key + M. It works just like having the screen turn off after one minute, except faster, woohoo. Good luck, mate!
