Hi All
I would like to ask what parts (eg screws, heatsink, fan Etc. ) are required to update a single 5870 to 2 x 5870 on an M17x R2 ?

The main parts that you would need are the GPU fan, GPU itself with heatsink attached and Crossfire cable.
Thats it really.
Give Dell a buzz and you should be able to buy it off them. They will give you everything that you will need. It should cost around $350 to $400.
Cheers.

thanks,
I already tried to mail dell but I think they are not interested in my situation cos they did not reply.
I contacted a dell authorised reseller in my country (Malta) but they asked for $800 (just for the parts) and to add things up they only quoted the gpu only -
Here is some part numbers maybe help you when your on the phone to who ever.

Yeh try ringing around. Dell will give you the run around. It will be annoying but thats how most people have gotten the better deal so far. You will have to just keep ringing around until you get the right person to buy from. It is very annoying and frustrating I know. Unless you can get the contacts from someone else here on the forum who has recently also made the purchase and is willing to give you their rep information that would be extremely helpful. Also depending where you are located.
Good Luck chiefs.
Cheers.

Thanks All
will be grateful if someone can give me a valid dell tel. no.
p.s. offtopic,
I am in process to upgrade my i7 720 to maybe 920 or 940,
Q: is the installed fan/hsink able to deal with the 920/40 . . in other words, do I need the cpu only for the cpu upgrade ? -
Yeah spideRMaN you only need the cpu & some thermal paste.
-
Yup the heatsink is fine to use chiefs. It will support all and any of the CPU upgrades you wish to apply.
The 920XM is very good value atm at Ebay. ES and QS versions.
Cheers.

Thank You !!
on the main topic now
is there any parts list for the complete M17x-R2 please ?
so far I got: (thanks Sauce)
- C8245 Ati Radeon Mobility HD 5870
- F605N - Right Fan (I think I need the right fan but not sure)
need:
CrossFire Cable
Heat sinks
screws
what else ?
-
That is the wrong one. You already have the C8245 in your machine if you have a single (master) 5870. This is the card you want to buy:
RV546 Dual Ati Radeon Mobility HD 5870 (with CFX cable)
And yes, you need the right fan. The master card/fan are on the left side. The secondary card/fan are on the right side.
Crossfire cable comes with RV546.
Screws are irrelevant. -
Does Alienware give you the option to have a Tech install it for you for an additional fee or do you have to do it yourself. I was just wondering...
-
Yup Dell does give you the option to have a tech come out and help you install it. I'm not to sure if it is part of the price or not. It used to cost an additional fee with previous GPU upgrades however I'm not to sure if anyone here has done that. Most seem to have just bought them and installed it themselves.
I'm sure if you get a good enough rep they will help you out with the installation. Its quite easy to do.
Cheers.

Dell Techinician in my Country (Malta) . . it's a no go m8
as I said, they asked for $800 for the card only and they don't know what they are talking about.
last time I went to the shop (Intercomp, which is a dell authorised seller from where I bought the M17x) the salesman took 30min talking to the technican just to conclude that the M17x - R2 is not upgradable and has no user replacable parts inside
I can't even imagine the technician touching or walking next to my laptop lol.
@Easirok
Thanks

$800.. that's $150 more than what I sold for my complete 5870 CF kit.
update a 5870 to XF 5870
