    Hello Guys:

I have an Alienware 17 2013 with nvidia gtx770 and i want to upgrade to 880. People from DELL that is no possible because 880 usea another chipset the only upgrade i can do is to 860. Is this true??

That certainly does not sound right to me. I would not be too surprised if there is something different, but the information is not being presented in a clear and accurate manner. Maybe someone that owns a newer Alienware 17 with GTX 880M can post a screen shot or two for you to compare with your chipset details. They should all be HM87 (Haswell) chipset. They may have fixed something with the motherboard that was messed up because it needed to be fixed, and whatever was messed up did not play nice with the 880M. I think the newest BIOS update was primarily intended for 880M.

Exactly it doesn't sound right to me either because why i can upgrade to 860 and not to the 880.. i don't think that they change the HM87 (Haswell) for another just for a video card or i'm wrong? because they are selling the 3 card on the same model 770, 860 and 880. default option is the 860 and then you can choose between 770 and 880 in the first base price. In the order two base price there is no choice the default video card is the AMD Radeon™ R9 M290X with 4GB GDDR5. So if any one can help me with this issue i will appreciate.

I was able to upgrade my M17x R3 to a GTX 870M successfully.

That makes no sense whatsoever. The person who told you this is wrong.

If you wish to upgrade to the 880M, go for it. It will work.

Maybe there (Dell) putting customers off purchasing the 880m since they are having a load of issues with customer who already have the GPU.

A simple google search turned up this thread: Upgrading an Alienware 17 (new) GPU

Now I'm nervous. Just pulled the trigger on an MSI 880m from upgrademonkey for my Alienware 17. Better hold on to the 780M until everything is guaranteed to work well then. Will report back :)

PS: has anyone managed to extract the original Dell VBIOS for the 880m on the refreshed AW17? I've been searching for hours without luck. Please help :(

Thanks for the info guys. Certainly the person in DELL thta tell me thta 880 use a different chipset is wrong. Then i contact Alienware sales departmente and i asked if the chiptset change if a choose a different gpu than the 770 and they say no, laptop always use the same chipset HM87. So i guess is safe to upgrade to the 880 :)

Just be sure you're running A09 or newer and you should be fine.

I beleive Johnksss and Svl7 have already got a VBIOS ready for release for the 880m. They just won't release at this time due to other members coming out of the wood work claiming that this is there work and it was stolen. People like that ruin our community.

I understand. The thing is svl7 VBIOS is 'modified' for OC and better performance. What I'm after is the ORIGINAL Alienware VBIOS installed on 17" 880m systems, though at this stage I'm still in doubt whether it is really necessary. Will the MSI card I bought just plug-and-play straight into my 17 like that or does the system need to 'recognise' it as a AW card (hence the need for a Dell VBIOS)? I already have the latest A10 system BIOS and Nvidia WHQL drivers installed. Thanks a lot if you can help :)
