The R1 and R2 are very easy on the eyes and the R3 is the fugly one :D ... Just kidding.

The CPU's on R1's are Core 2 based, R2's are Core i based (3 digits denote the CPU model) and the R3 is 2nd gen Core i based (4 digits denote the CPU model). Physically you cant really see a difference between the R1 and R2 apart from looking at the CPU sticker underneath the notebook.

The R1 and R2 have a strip of media touch capacitive buttons above the keyboard for volume, media, wifi, etc control with only the icon for the button lit up. The R3's is physical media buttons arranged in between a wavy design thingamabob. Easiest way to spot the R3 though is by the black brushed metal bezel around the keyboard which the R1/R2 dont have.

Or you could also just do a simple google search for "Alienware M17x R3 review"... its not difficult at all... for reals :p

If you get the service tag from that person I would be able to see it on our system. All R3's should be able to run the 32Gb with the Corei7.
