im wondering what card are plug n play for my m17x r3. i have a gtx 770m but it refuses to work. ive tried turning off IGP and turning on PEG nothing. just displays black. (if you know how to fix this is would appreciate it.)
right now im looking for another card to replace it. is the gtx 680m plug n play? if not what about amd card i know they tend to play nice when it comes to plug n play. (eying the hd 8970m since it has 4GB vram.)
thanks for the help.![]()

No, but there are plenty of threads specifically for your machine and the 680m to check out if you want to get one. 100% success rate in the R3 is what I've seen.
The forum search might still be building but a trawl shouldn't take too long. In the last week for sure. The titles say it all.
No help with the 770m.
Good luck.
Edit: just remembered, isn't there an SG setting you also need to change? -
from what ive garnered its SG that you set to PEG. i might be worng though. still wish i knew WTH was wrong with my 770m. my guess is vbios. the card is giving me beep errors so i assume its not dead.

6970M
6990M
560M
580M
all officially supported
7970m, 680m both work very well but require changing a few settings in the bios.
770m, 780m, 8970m, r9 m290x, 880m should technically work as well with the same settings as the 7970m/680m,
there's a thread here somewhere with what to change, following that should allow the gpus to work. I think it was this one:

I did recall (after posting) that there were two previous posters that tried the 770m and both could not get it to work. There is no logical reason I can see but they both gave up and got either a 680m or a 780m both proven to work.
Theory: It has to be some problem with the boot code (in the vbios) that causes the POST failure, the 9xx cards have a similar problem requiring a new type of boot - UEFI. This was not introduced until during the R4 model being current. It could be an early attempt from NV at using this code?
I tried to search the forum but it's not working too well right now -
I can say that the 7970m is a fantastic upgrade for the m17xR3. It was almost completely plug and play for me and if I had gotten that upgrade prior to ordering the 17r2 I would likely not have bought the r2. Driver installation was even as easy as downloading the latest omega drivers from AMD. I did read somewhere that someone had gotten switchable graphics working as well, though I've not tried it myself as of yet.

only problem for me with the 7970m is that the only go up to 2GB vram (from what ive seen on ebay). which is an issue for me i need atleast 4GB. (8970m has this)

8970M is not a good idea... It doesn't work as easily as the 7970M unless you get a Dell card.. for that price (£300++ I've seen before), might as well get a 680M/780M..

is it confirmed that the 780m will work with a bunch of hassle? i don't want anymore mysterious reason for cards not working like the 770m

I can only confirm from a few 780m users I have assisted. Problem is that I don't always know exactly the sequence they did things.
The only difference from the 680m instructions I saw was that it was a good idea to disable the on-board sound in the bios before starting. Re-enable it after all the upgrade and driver is complete. I think I mentioned this to you before?
I never found out the cause of some R3's loosing sound with a 780m but fixing it after the fact is a bunch of faffing about.
You do need to take a little more care with the pads and paste but most people who research it get it. The 780m runs a little hotter than the 680m (as you'd expect). -
also given my budget it looks like ill be going for a gtx 680m when i get the rest of the money together.
well we're on the subject does anyone know of a fix for the 770m in the m17x r3 where the screen displays black after changing it to the right settings in the bios? just wondering if anyone knows of a work around it be great if i didnt have to get a new card at all would save me allot of troubleLast edited: Feb 2, 2015 -

I don't think you'll be disappointed with the 680m. I'm getting 45fps~70fps in AC unity with most of the settings maxed (AA is a killer though).Zenobia K'eal likes this. -
If you want a 8970M, you can take a clevo card and flash it to the dell R9 M290X vBios, since it is 100% the same card and core. I did not even have to play with bios settings.
DISCLAIMER: This was way back in 2012, when AMD catalyst still supported MUX/Fixed switching. Fixed switching has been removed from all catalyst versions from 14.6 and onwards. 14.4 is the last catalyst version supporting MUX/Fixed switching. -
anyone know if the 485m works in it? i know some of them shipped with 460m so im guess they do.
-
Why would you bother with such a hot, crappy card? You would be better off getting a 6990M or 7970M if you want a high performance card for cheap.

The 6990M is no cooler than the 485M/580M (they are based off the same chip).
-
Most 6990M can hold stock clocks at 0.975 volts, if not 0.95 volts. I saw a 15 degree reduction in temperature when I had 6990M with undervolt and stock clocks. Couple that with proper repaste, i wasn't hitting above 70C

For me the 4x GPUs that I've tested in the M17x R3 in the past that were fully compatible and plug N play were:
AMD 6990M
AMD 7970M
GTX 675MX
GTX 780M
I also used the same GPU heatsink for all 4 GPUs.

what are the card that are confirmed to plug n play with the m17x r3?
