I am currently sporting a 7970m (single config, since doing sli/xfire seems complicated with psu mods and stuff), but was wondering if there were any better upgrades out there?

I'm sure people are trying the top of the line 880M/870M into an R2. 780M should work but it isn't a huge step up from a 7970M.

the newer gen cards are pretty pricey.

i would just take the gamble and go crossfire.
if you can find a decent 7970m for a fair price of course.

If the 780M will work, the 880M should work as well, but both will require some tweaking and tampering to do so. The 880M is about 30% faster (on average) than the 7970M, and has 3x more VRAM. I think it's worth it to upgrade to that from the 7970M, if you can get one for a decent price.

780m has been already tested and reported as non working. 7970/680m looks like the last compatible choice. Today I've installed a single 7970m on mine. Couldn't be happier

7970m is the best you can get so far. It's not officially recommended but it's proven to work flawlessly.

Thanks for all the valuable info. I guess my last option would be to try xfire 7970... its just than I already experience thermal shutdowns (or power related, not sure) once in a while, so I am concerned that I wont be able to handle 2.... not to mention that the whole modification thing for the PSU seems way to complicated (I mean, I have 3 psu's, but all that soldering and stuff seems way over my head).

well I guess its one 7970 for me... thanks all :)
