Hi guys,
Firstly, I want to address the Mods....I hope this isnt a subject that is like pouring petrol onto a naked flame....
Obviously, we all know (or soon will) about the new revision and, basically, I wanted to add a thread with a poll to kind of "gauge" what people would do or will do given the current announcement.
I feel that it will give people with strong views on the subject, a voice , via a poll that may or may not be of interest to others.
Anyway, hope its OK and not against NBR rules.
So here goes!
Fellow NBR members.....you have the power to voice your opinion via a simple vote. I will try and list as many options as I can but if anyone thinks of another, please let me know....
Many of you will have been holding off on a system purchase, many of you will have been waiting for news with a view to a future purchase and many of you will have just been interested to see what comes of the new revision.
I dont expect anyone to post with negative things about the new system, obviously constructive points are welcome.
The poll I have attatched is basically what this thread is about.....just vote and lets see what the majority of fellow NBR members think "without" discussion about "if" , "when", "why" etc...
PLEASE DONT POST NEGATIVE THINGS ABOUT THE R3 AS THE THREAD WILL JUST BE CLOSED DOWN.....THANK YOU! - THOUGHTS ON THE TECHNOLOGY INVOLVED I WOULD DEEM TO BE ACCEPTABLE (AS I HOPE DO THE MODS!) AS ITS TECHNOLOGY AS A GENERAL DISCUSSION AND NOT DIRECTED SPECIFICALLY AT ANY LAPTOP SYSTEM!
Thanks
Stevie.![]()

I think it's a good idea and should avoid further useless threads about the R3.

Thanks Katalin....

I think "I will keep my R2" should be an option.
Personally I wouldn't sacrifice performance for the few pounds of weight it lost and the RGB-LED screen for the 3D screen technology that isn't even near the level it should be.
I don't know the exact price range it will retail for, but that will be a big decision maker in whether or not it's worth it compared to the competition. -

Imma keep my R2! 3D is dumb and outdated, and SB is a giant step that should have been taken a long time ago. The R3 is a fail and the M18X is sure to follow, what happened to RGB 1200p and dual GPU's? It's frustrating cuz I would have liked to see a further upgrade path with current systems (R1/R2 owners)
-
This is so pointless. Obviously right now everyone on the "enthusiast" side of things is going to be upset of no dual GPU option. The majority of people that will buy this notebook know exactly what they are getting; a 17 inch form factor that is thinner, lighter, updated with a powerful single GPU that should price cheaper than the flagship R2. They are the Asus G73 buyers who like AW quality.
The flagship WILL eventually come out and then of course people with money will upgrade their R2's. The 5870 is older tech and the 6970/485/470 are all nice upgrades over the existing 5870. Therefore it will be much better to have throttlestop and SB, dual 6970's, usb 3.0 and all the other upgrades. This should probably hit by summer which is great timing for many people as they will have owned their m17x for sometime by then. -

Im not after a debate here on good, bad, hate it, love it, could have done with this, should have had that, wish it had the other....
Just a vote.....vote with your mouse dude! - lets have a real picture...poll's speak for themselves and saves reading through alot of waffle at the end of the day! -
I say stick with the R2, better value. I'd just wait till tommorrow and see what that brings and go from there.
-
Wow, lot of people disappointed in M17x R3 it looks. Or is everyone like me and always looking for better and faster.
-
Sticking with my R2 for now. She'll be right until the m17x-R4.

I voted to wait for maybe a surprise "18x" or some other game-changing machine. I just don't think R3 will be a serious step up. I might have voted for trying something different, maybe Sager or Asus, but then again, the build quality and case design of Aliens is so far ahead. I'm really just glad that I have a new R2 and shouldn't need anything new for a long time.

I voted it's a disappointment but I will be buying one with every option with the intent to play with 3d and see if what the r3 offers can change my negative impression so far.
-
Then again, why have 1 all out machine when you can create 2? A mediocre same size replacement and all out larger model. From a sales point its a good business model. From the all out performance aspect, I'll wait for the rumored M18.

Actually, Phat, I was thinking something similar... Is R3 the Alien "answer to the recession"? Maybe keep it modest, keep the price kinda mellow (?), try some cagey new ideas to check the tepid marketplace, and be ready to allow it to be equipped almost exactly like current high-end R2s, just in case it doesn't go off like gangbusters? I suspect there is a tight and careful strategy being played over in Texas.

I think even if they really screw it up, we only have around 6 months befor the next one comes out...
-
why isnt there a "id rather burn in hell than give dell another $" option? lol

altough this is how a lot feel about them not because of the R3.
Let's just vote and see the result! -
and you telling me made my monday, so were both happy.
Dont ya love win-win? lol -
I'll reserve my judgement until it's released and I actually see the final specs.

r3 on dell UK
The Dell Online Store: Build Your System
no rgb, only 1 single 460m is available -
Until 3D does not require accessories (such as glasses) to work, it is of no interest to us. We do not even have loaded M17x-R2 systems & I still was not impressed by the R3.
We will be keeping our R2s. -
Let's see, according the the UK version:
1. One less case color option (but the new R3 chassis is a bit sexier, except for the lid). +0.5
2. All 3 Sandy Bridge processors are ranked higher than the previous generation on notebookcheck.net (although this is preliminary as there hasn't been a lot of testing or benchmarking). Undeterminable.
3. Only 1 graphics card, and only 1 choice. -1
4. All three screen options are WLED and either 900 or 1080p. -1
5. Highest screen option is 120hz. This is required for 3D gaming but I have never seen much come of it. +0.5
6. Choices of 4, 6, 8, 16 :O, and -32- GB of RAM. Certain other premium laptops have had this option for a while. The higher amounts of RAM require more expensive Windows options. Still, choice for the win. +1 (No idea why, but the 32GB option multiplies the price by 40,000, making the price £123,172.99+)
The rest of the options are the normal things. It comes to about a 0 on my score, meaning I'm not overly upset, but I'm not impressed either. It's nice it looks like they're adding in the options for lots of RAM, but if that's why they gave up the CFX/SLI options, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. They say that the R3 has long battery life (up to -6 hours- at full power, their words not mine). Who knows about that one. Of course I have to assume this is just preliminary, and we haven't seen the whole story yet. I do like the new touch panel for the settings, some of the keyboard markings, and possibly the look of the front speakers. I'm not sure about some of the ports they moved around, or the fact that they make it sound like the casing is no longer full on aluminum (soft touch feel?). Either way, my R2 serves me just fine and likely will continue to do so.
As for my vote, my option would be something like this:
The R3 is an incredible disappointment so far, is less impressive in summary than the R2, and it looks like they're just trying to shoe-horn something in in between the m15x and this supposed new m18x people have been talking about. Plastic Alienware with no SLI/CFX FTL. -

I am still waiting for the R3 to check it out. If AW has indeed an M18X coming out then I understand the R3 choices they made about single GPU, etc...
I believe that the weight reduction, high-end plastic compromise with single GPU might be the right choice since an M18X is coming out.
I am not as disappointed and I will wait and see... -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Again, more endless waiting....if it turns out that there ISNT an M18x, then all I can say is that R3 is a letdown in terms of a flagship replacement for many of us. -

Think i'll keep the "M17x classic".
Alienware's website is listing both the R2 and R3. -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Based on the days events, I dont know what is going on really! - the R3 seems to be available in the UK but starts at a whopping £1799gbp or $2800usd compared to the base spec in the US with start price of £1499usd.
Seems like no dual cards as anticipated..UK site advertises only single 460m atm but US site allows for a choice of AMD or NVidia single gpu's
As expected, a few blips on the site (price of ram upgrade typo thats says £100k+ lol.
Nothing that i dont think people were expecting or not expecting so the info is out there, would be great if someone knew if the R3 could handle a sli/xfire setup at some point....
For now, looks like whats on the table is good bad and indifferent, depending on how you look at it.
Thanks to all who caasted a vote....poll is still open so fill your boots if you wanna! -

What's the SM2/SM3 score for the CFX 5870 - stock clocks?
Just wonderin' cause the 6970M Benchies we saw way back in December might help use gauge performance. -

and R3 rhymes with not for me i would be better off with these "gifts". Let's see what comes next in dual GPU i'd say heh?
How bout you,tempted yet? -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
The more i think about this whole R3 thing, the more dispondent I am about it...not for me, personally cos im not changing no matter what!
Its others in the UK that I feel sorry for. Those that would be looking for an AW laptop.
Its obvious that the spec is what it is for all countries...if we are talking base spec here, then its $1499 for US residents but almost twice that for UK residents at a bit over $2800usd.
I mean, Dell...where do you get your pricing strategy from? - it would be cheaper for a UK resident to FLY OUT to the states, buy one, undo it and use it a bit and then come home with it...
If that isnt absurd, i dont know what is....
Also, given the pricing as it appears to be and IF there is an M18x.....god knows how much that will cost us poor Brits....im reckoning on well over $4000usd as a base spec....
Didnt someone say that Dell were making things "affordable?" ..... certainly not for recession-hit Britain...go figure! -
katalin_2003 NBR Spectre Super Moderator
^^That certainly needs to be shout out.I understand they are not getting assembled in the UK but still they're not using an actual UFO to ship them to the Kingdom.
what would or what wil you do?
