If you are talking about Windows updates, then it will all be automatic and nothing for you to worry about.

If you are talking about drivers, then yes; but only after you have formatted and reinstalled Windows 7.

If you are talking about installing drivers as soon as you get your laptop ( no formatting/reinstalling Windows 7) there is no need, Dell/Alienware will set up your laptop so you can start using it without having to install anything. Just turn it on and go.

Over time driver updates will be released, there is no need to install these updates in any specific order unless you have just formatted and reinstalled Windows.

Upgrading to a 1080p screen I would imagine wont be cheap or easy. Defiantly SSD plus second HDD for storage. Without knowing your specs its impossible to suggestion any other upgrades really.

A SSD is really worth it, but the 1080 screen you should've bought along with the laptop, it's not an easy/inexpensive task.
    What did you get?

unfortunately my only choice was a laptop from bestbuy so i bought the m17x they offered. I thought I read the 1080p screen is only like 200-300?

    CPU i7 2630
    ram 8gb
    HDD 750gb
    video card 6970m
    screen 900p :(

With those specs I would throw in a SSD and move the HDD as a storage drive. From what I have read changing the screens isnt easy. I couldnt do the 900p screen so for me I would upgrade that if possible. Everythink else doesnt really need any upgrading if you ask me.

Or since It's new, you have a return window, return it and reorder not sure if they'll ask you to pay a restocking fee though :/

Download GPUz and look at the shader count plus the core and mem speeds.

The 6990 has 1120 shaders and the stock clocks are 715mhz core and 900mhz memory.
