I think you should get 3 years. For a $2000+ system i would not be happy if it only lasted me 1 year.

Since you are in USA you should get the 3 year advanced as it is only 299$.
Here in sweden the warranty cost 4500kr/6.5=693$, but I extended my warranty anyway, because if your computer breaks, it will be even more expensive.

I hope my answer will help you in your choice.
    Best regards

I was thinking the same thing...
I went with 3yr SquareTrade Warranty (w/ Accident Protection )
I was able to get it for $100 cheaper yesterday when I ordered :)
    I probably made a wrong choice... i am a n00b.

Would love to know if Dell InHome beats out SquareTrade?

Wrong. Here the cost of 3 year warranty is $564, and this is the discount pricing I got from a high up dell service team. I know this because I tried extending it, but they asked me over $600...

get as much as you can afford. like others get 3 years. in my opinion, w/ kids especially get the complete care (abit more) bcuz covers drops, spills, etc.

while square trade is cheaper, you only have 2 options when repair is needed:
    1. send it in to a one of their shops. 2. bring it to an approved local shop, you pay, then square trade refunds.
only problem is once you have done enuff repairs to equal the value of your warranty item (example: r3 = $2200), square trade has met their obligations and no more warranty even if you have a year left. plus, if parts are needed to be ordered to replace you are looking to wait probably even longer for parts.

great thing about dell, is that they will come to your house and fix, so you can watch or whatever. but you don't have to send it anywhere or drop it off for the most part. if dell deems unfixable, they will replace it. squaretrade will just refund you price you paid for warranty or remainder of balance left of laptop value minus all repairs done under them. in some situations, you may have to wait for parts even with dell warranty, but at least it will be dell parts and those parts will be convered under dell warranty unlike a local shop may opt to use non-dell parts, etc, plus you likely have to wait less for dell to send parts.

dell's warranty is more expensive, but to me seems the least of hassles for such an expensive, but beautiful machine. squaretrade is good, but i don't think good enuff for m17x.

the choice is a matter of preference and circumstance.

but i recommend dell's warranty if can be afforded.

lastly, w/ all warranties whether dell, squaretrade, etc., you may run into some problems, but w/ some patience all should be ok.

I would also go with the three year warranty. You could get the advanced warranty, or pay for north american tech support. That also would be a worth while investment.

3 or 4 year honestly. By the time you get done spending all this money, you want it to last. And these machines do break down over time. More than one person has written a post sighing how they got to 18 months and machine up and died, throwing 1000's of $ down the drain.

If you want it to last, protect it like you mean it.
Dell comes to your house. They overnight ship any parts you need.
If it gets really bad, they can even replace a machine with a newer model.
    No other warranty comes close.

Wow, I never noticed that part... I feel stupid now.
I just tried to call Dell and add the dell warranty, they wanted me to cancel my order and replace the order at a higher amount.( i had some promo discounts... )...

I tried to get a hold of my sales rep, but she is out till Monday...

I really don't want to get my shipped date pushed further... :(
They won't quote me a price for the warranty until after is ships... ( and i heard its $$$ more if you buy afterwards )

    Status Update
    -------------------------

Able to get a hold of my original sales rep... they were able to cancel my old order ( who knows why they can't add a warranty to an order) and re-book it as the same low price as when the mx17 r3 was on sale and the dell adv 3yr warranty + she expedited the order... now the waiting game starts again.
