R3 has options for a 6970M and 460M graphics card which are significantly faster than the XPS 17. They also have better cooling and of course the alienware light fx, styling and name are a bonus.

Does it have the same cpu, graphics card, battery life? Ram, hard drives, standard warranty duration? All of these differences will affect price and i am not sure what config of the XPS your looking at.

For me it was the price (30% off @ AAFES), build quality, style, 460m, cooling, and the cool lights.
