I think it supports up to 8GB 1866mhz otherwise up to 32GB 1600mhz. Not 100% sure on the 1866mhz though. Only have 16GB random brand 1600mhz CL10 ram myself.

Anyone know for sure? ANd is there any noticeable performance boost comparing 16gb 1600mhz CL10 ram vs 8gb 1866mhz CL11 ram?

I am 99% sure it doesn't support 1866Mhz. I think there is a workaround and doing BIOS changes and some other tampering you can get it to run at those speeds.

In regards to your second question, the 1600Mhz CL10 is a better performer as far as I know. Anything above 1600Mhz is negligible performance gain, and NO gain in any scenarios other than benchmarking.. So going for the lowest CL is always best.

However if you choose to get the 1866Mhz RAM and you can't run it at that speed natively, you can downclock it and achieve tighter timings.

But in conclusion, I think you gotta go through a bunch of crap to get it to run at those speeds... which I think is definitely not worth it since there is no performance improvement and you would have CL11 instead of CL10.

I would highly suggest 16GB 1600Mhz. I don't know certain facts though but I'm pretty sure about the above, hopefully someone will chime in. :)

The R4 has no problem up to 2133mhz.

Intel like to understate their memory controller performance, there is a tiny chance you get a dud CPU that can't cope with faster memory but I have only ever seen this happen once.

    Would this 2133hz ram work?

Kingston HyperX Model KHX21S12P1K2/8 Laptop Memory - Newegg.com

would this 8gb it be a decent improvement over 16bg of 1600hz? its slightly more expensive for the 16gb 1600

Kingston HyperX Model KHX21S12P1K2/8 Laptop Memory - Newegg.com

ok well taking a flyer on 8gb of the 2133mhz ram from kingston, only 72 bucks with promo code, so good deal! i'll let you know how it goes, either way its an upgrade from my current mismatched 6gb's of ram! And I think anything over 8gb is probably overkill right

Here is the machine's memory specifications:

Memory module connectors four internally-accessible DDR3 using JEDEC SODIMM
    sockets
Memory module capacities 2 GB, 4 GB, and 8 GB
Memory type up to 1600 MHz, unbuffered non-ECC, single-channel and dual-channel DDR3 configuration
    Memory configurations
    possible 4 GB, 6 GB, 8 GB, 12 GB, 16 GB, 24 GB and 32 GB

However as Meaker says, it migth be capable of running 8GB of 2133 or 1866.

It will depend somewhat on the IMC in the CPU, if it's a real dud it may only work up to 1600mhz (which intel specifies as their max supported speed, which is why no manufacturer on notebooks officially supports this) but the chances are very slim and a CPU upgrade/swap would sort that.

hmmm ok, well i'll let you know in a couple days for certain :D

well everything seems to be working fine...

annoying thing was that alienware installed my ram in slots 3&4 so i had to take off the keyboard to get to it

and so it was such a pain to get to it I popped both ram sticks in slots 3&4... tried to turn it on... NOTHING!

So i thought it might be some sort of dual channel issue so i left one stick in slot 3, and put the other stick in slot 1 on the other side of the computer, it booted up fine and ran 3dmark and everything seemed ok

you multiply the hertz x2 on CPU-Z right? so it seems to be working at that mhz

is there a large difference from running dual channel and single channel?
