Hey
Just got my m17x r4, installed wow noticed when running around in panda world I'm only getting around 50-60fps. Shouldn't I get more fps? I know it's enough but I still think it's a bit on the low side for this card?every thing maxed out in settings though.
Cpu is i7-3630QM @ 2.4/3.4ghz
8gigs of ram 1600mhz
And installed on a Intel 520series ssd
3dmark11 gives me little over 6100 score
What do you think?
Have a great Sunday!

Sounds about right.
Try lowering the resolution. If that increases FPS then it's GPU bound. (so a small OC might help)
If not then its CPU bound. (Cannot OC the 3630QM so nothing you can do about it.) -
Well then my cpu is the bottleneck
not that it isn't enough. Having around 100fps in sw
Tried lowering the resolution from 1920x1080 to 1024x768 didn't change the fps -

Still a bit annoying when I payed this much for the 680 m
but oh well, is it better in first person shooter games?
If I check cpu usage it says around 20% in use
And thanks for your help -

Can you check gpu usage with msi afterburner? -

Aight thanks
Didnt know wow would eat up that much graphics, now I know hehe
Funny thing is nothing happens when i lower aa, I only see a increase in fps when lowering shadow details and liquid details I think. So I think thats where I should start -

Tanks guys! Yea I remember how laggy things could be in dalaran
cpu heavy game yea.
I could try a small oc. I think the card will be fine it's running at max 66degrees celcius. Should I just use msi ab? Loong time ago I played with oc'ing -

First small pixel error, new screen is filled with dust behind the glass.. They are gonna change the screen again today, fingers crossed! -
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
Hope it goes smoothly for ya.

nothing I see in daily use.. Running on 3rd screen and I've had the computer for a week now.. Oh well, atleast excellent service from dell!

WoW is bizarre like this. Very graphically demanding, yet even the most recent expansions look like they were released in 2006. I quit a few months back, and my CrossfireX 6990m were struggling to output 60 FPS most of the time.
-
When you start maxing the settings out on WoW it very very quickly becomes a machine killer again. It makes me laugh when people ask what WoW needs to run and the usual answer is something along the lines of "lol, WoW does not need much to run just get a cheap computer for it" and for the most part if you want to run on low then yes that will work. Mine fluctuates anywhere from 60-140 depending on what I am looking at and or doing at the time in WoW, but I gaurantee it isn't maxing out your CPU..I can monitor my 3610 while playing WoW and the levels hardly even move even in raids. I don't really rely on FPS anymore for much of anything...even in LFR with everything maxed and spells flying everything I sit at about 40 FPS with a 7970m and it is still buttery smooth I can't tell that it isn't 100fps. Unless your seeing the frame lag I wouldn't really worry about it.
Remember as well that WoW does not make use of your Quad core, it only utilizes dual core support so you will never see the full benefit of the Quad.
They did a large graphical improvement just before MoP launched and it changed a lot of the video settings. A lot of people running lower end systems saw some pretty impressive FPS improvement and were able to turn their settings up a lot due to Blizzard cleaning up a lot of the code. Some higher end systems suffered and continue to suffer for an unknown reason. AMD released a driver awhile ago that was supposed to drastically improve the performance in MoP.
Every game will run different and I have no doubt that your system will continue to run WoW on ultra for many years to come without any issues. -
Yea, never thought wow was a problem to run, always blamed my 5year old computer.. But again I ran 30-40fps on that but nothing on ultra though. Its funny relly
The graphic looks so old yet it consumes alot of gpu power!
-
I think they have upgraded the graphics nicely considering the game is 7 years old. Find a screen shot of launch day WoW compared to now and it looks like quite a different game now. I think because these changes happen slowly over time we don't notice them as much and just become accustomed to them as they happen.

WoW is demanding as soon as you hit the good/high/very high settings especially at 1080p.
No reason to run it at very high max settings if it feels a lil wavy and laggy even if you are seeing 60fps. If you stay native resolution and turn it down a notch to high, you should see around 80-90fps which would be the sweet spot.
I remember running WoW using a gtx 660m and a 3610qm quad and the sweet spot was native 1080p res and good settings and it stayed in constant 90-100fps, as soon as a put the settings to high, it drop around 60-70fps and then ultra made it wavy and laggy at 30-40 fps.
So a GTX 680m should be able to run it smoothly at mostly ultra and some high settings at around 70-80fps. -
By native what do you mean?
I was playing a little with the settings before, everything on ultra I run 45-50fps still in pandaria. I will have to turn every thing down to "Good" settings to see 70-75 fps.
If I change lets say liquid details and shadow it only gives me a small increase in fps. Like 3-5 fps. Everything else basically gives me zero fps gains except if I turn it down alot.. Kinda weird imo. Feels like I cant just lower some of the 'parameters' to high, and see any noticeable fps gains.. Will have to really lower it to see any gains. But I guess thats what it should be like.. -
Native refers to the monitors designed maximum resolution...if you but a 1080p monitor then 1920 x 1080 is the native resolution of that monitor. The native resolution is usually the maximum resolution that the LCD supports. The thing is if it is running smoothly at 40FPS then why worry about it? I don't really understand why people get mad when a game runs just fine but isn't pulling 100+ fps....There is a lot going on in the open world of WoW and if you have your view distance maxed the game is rendering a massive area. Walk in to a cave and watch your FPS jump to like 150+ because it is a much smaller area and has a lot less to worry about. I wouldn't worry about your FPS unless it starts to drop below the normal levels for your system. I am getting 40-50 FPS running around mining but it looks just as smooth if I turn down settings and pull 100+ so I just leave everything maxed because it looks pretty. I have no doubt that it will be a long time before WoW has to be brought off Ultra settings on my computer.

On any PC game now with my R4, it's V-sync on ( a Must), ..55-60 fps on the highest graphics setting on native resolution of 1080p (R4 screen is 60 Hz Refresh rate), ..and an OC'ed GPU (893 core / 2106 memory - 711/1800 are the stock clocks for my 680M) is the " Only" way for me. ..."only".
NVidia Control Panel set to High Quality, Amb. Occ enabled high on NVd CP..
My 680M is always OC'ed..
GPU can only reach 72*C on this OC no matter how long I play on any game. No cooling pads, no stands, no nothing..
D3 has lots of tearing so v-sync on is a must, and boy D3 looks super awesome. BF3, TW2, Metro 2033, Crysis 2 DX11 always with v-sync on and it made scenes more realistic due to no more tearing..
V-sync (limits FPS to screen's refresh rate) will tax the GPU ofcourse.. -
Ah thanks!
I get what native is now.
Yea I mean ~50ish fps is enough for me. It runs smooth with no lag. I think I just had to have it confirmed that it wouldn't go higher with the 680m
Yea about overclocking the gpu. Does it hurt the gpu in the long run? I know it shouldn't get hot, but I think we have excellent cooling in the r4 and should not be a problem -
As with anything OCing creates more heat and heat can over time kill electronics. While yes the system can probably handle it just fine unless you need to OC it I just don't see the point but that is just my opinion
. I won't even be thinking about OCing until my GPU can not longer keep up as well as I would like. I am not sure how it may affect a warranty if you OC and they can prove it was OCed if anything ever happened.
Short answer is yes it should handle it just fine, long story there are many things that can happen and you take a chance by doing it. -
My ASUS G73SW with a solid 460M spent its whole 1st year OC'ed reaching max GPU of 86*C which was with Crysis 2 HRT Dx 11. Other games reached 82*C max OC'ed, but at the later part 86*C started showing and that was my limit.. My ASUS G73 is still good as new and solid as ever even as of today. But there's an allowable limit to GPU temps.
I always run GPU-Z to monitor temps. HWInfo for CPU temps. NVidia Inspector for OC'ing the 680M.
At 69-72*C max GPU temp with the 680M, the R4's vents are really blowing hot air, so I keep the vents totally free of obstruction.
I will lower my OC on the 680M once I see 76*C max GPU temp. in a 4 hr. straight gaming. ..But so far 72*C is still max at 893/2106-2400 Mhz.
Also, Paste degredation due to heat overtime (or excessive heat). Re-paste I suppose in 2 yrs. to get back to lower temps. if ever there's a drastic temp inc. ...But we'll see. -
lower shadows, it eats up your fps. turn down view distance to good
-
In WOW when I am not in the huge raids and just around in pandaria or anywhere else I get 100+ FPS I only get 40-50 during 20 man raids. I run everything at Ultra, have view distance turned to the max, and even have sound quality turned up.
I have the 680m
3.7 quad core
16GB ram
512 SSD raid 0
and the 3D screen -
Also what addons are you running? Carbonite will eat 7fps or more
-
It's the shadows, they eat up your fps easily.
-
Yes the usual culprits are shadows, liquid effects, particle effects / density, view distance and addons. WoW is cpu hungry. Good luck !
wow + 680m getting around 50-60fps?
