[AW M18xR2] Suddenly the system goes to battery, then back to "plugged in". A random issue.

I'm experiencing an awkward issue. Suddenly the system goes to battery, displaying all the "on battery" warnings, and then a moment later switches back to the plugged in power. This happens on its own. Started a couple of days ago, and happens at random. Seems to be GPU related, i.e. it only happens when the cards switch between performance/power levels. This said, I can max out the cards and run them for hours (already tested than) under full load and nothing's happening if the load is constant. Changes between power levels seem to be the key. The cards are 2x 680M.

Two times this got even more awkward. The system switched to battery, then showed all appropriate indicators like it was switching back to the plugged in power, yet remained running (and draining) the battery. Kinda "on battery" ghosting.

My suspicion is that the motherboard is going. Any advice or recommendations what may be the problem are welcome. Thanks.

 

Mine does that when the AC adapter fiddles it’s way out of the socket and makes iffy contact

 

I'd say recheck AC adapter and try a different one if that doesnt help.
Sounds more like an adapter failing than motherboard to me

My old man is using my old R1. We will see each other for Easter so this is the soonest I can test that with his adapter. But:

First time the system went "ghosting" on battery despite staying plugged in, I restarted it (soft reboot) and when it booted back up, the issue didn't go away. Only a hard power off fixes the problem.

Also when it goes to battery, I tried disconnecting the adapter completely, also from the wall socket, and then re-connecting it 5 minutes later. This doesn't make the issue go away either. Only hard power off does the trick. This doesn't sound to me like an adapter problem, or does it? Maybe indeed if the adapter is going it can't properly talk to the motherboard.

So far I've been running on Intel internal gfx and it's been working fine for over 2 days now. But then running on discrete eats some 30 W maybe (as the CPU is rated max at 45W) vs some 200W running on both 680M SLI.

 

Yeah honestly sounds like a PSU issue, try unplugging the battery and using the system for a bit and see if it shuts down

 

This problem happened to me on a m18x r1.
Only when I played sometimes did it run on battery.

check temperature jack male enters the notebook,this overheats for cause false contact this parts:

For Reset, I removed the battery and 30 seconds on the power on button.
After the replacement ,I have solved no more overheating
