I'm just curious, how does the 4900MQ i7 on my AW18 that I"m selling compare to the newest offerings on the Dell/AW website in terms of performance? The current offerings on the i7 seem to be all over the map, whereas before it was all 4900 family as I recall, or?

It's still one of the fastest within a few percent of stock cpus.

ok, was just wondering if the new offerings were all that much faster... not getting much attention on my ad, so I thought maybe I was overpricing..

I can't comment on price (not even seen it but e en if i had I would not) but a user would not notice the difference between the 4900, 4910 and 4920 as only 200Mhz separates them.

Nope, the newer stuff isn't any faster. You've got something really upgradeable with sockets and slots right now, so I would urge you keep it. The new, new stuff (BGA) we have not seen for sale yet will actually be SLOWER, not faster... especially the CPUs. The BGA CPUs are pathetic low-TDP offerings and BGA GPUs almost always have about half the vRAM as an MXM equivalent. The CPUs often don't overclock at all, and the GPU frequently not as well. And, of course, this sort of trash cannot be upgraded or replaced as a repair/service measure. You've got something worth keeping and upgrading if you want more performance than what you already have.

Or, if your heart is set on selling it, maybe wait until the next new products are released and all of the real enthusiasts to do some homework before blowing their money find out everything is worthless BGA garbage. The real enthusiast will be looking for acceptable options and the price of the 18, M18xR2 and even the M18xR1 may go up instead of down once folks figure out newer is not better.

I wonder - how big of a difference does the CPU make on framerates for laptops anyway? I currently have 4710MQ, but might want to get a 4930MX QS or 4940MX QS.

    I'm afraid of two things:

    a) TDP - not worried about the temperatures necessarily, but about power. With the chip running at 3.7GHz, 880Ms in SLI can only support 1.037V each before the laptop starts drawing current from the battery in addition to the AC adapter.

    b) I run my games at 3440x1440 (21:9 display from LG), so CPU performance will matter even less than usual.

Broadwell's not coming to Socket G3 laptops, right?

Mr. Fox, I'm glad to read what you wrote... It was causing me to wonder if I am listed too high (on ebay as well) as I've only gotten two stupidly low ball offers (one was actually for $1 on ebay.. felt like reporting the guy)..

I don't necessarily want to part with this monster, but unfortunately I came down with a bad case of GAS (guitar acquisition syndrome) and spent a stupid amount of money on a Spector Bass.. That being said, I'm quite motivated since I don't need the wife freaking out when I don't pay off the credit card in one billing cycle without dipping into the bank account!

I'm even willing to throw in a hardly touched Beyerdynamic MXX300 headset if someone pays my asking price!

Ok guys, sorry if I'm bothering here but I just have to follow up and ask.. Because I'm getting some odd offers on ebay on this 18..

    Am I asking too much???

here's my listing on this forum (more or less same as the one on ebay): http://forum.notebookreview.com/notebooks-desktops-sale/768061-alienware-18-dual-780-s-32gb-raid-more.html

I've so far had two offers come in, and no other activity..

one offer for literally (no lie) for $1

the other came in at $1100 and I countered at $2250, and we went back and forth with me dropping $1 and he going up $50 for 3 times and I finally declined..

I know this it worth more than that... right?? advice is welcome gentleman... I just want to find this nice rig a home where it will be played and loved without losing my pants!

No your price of $2500 is great I would say... $2250 would be going a bit low IMO with all the stuff your'e throwing in...

yeah, everything logical tells me the price is great.. I'm even paying for free 2 day fedex!

but the actual offers (and lack thereof) have been odd to say the least... I'm just going to be patient I guess and see if someone sensible finds my ads/auction.

People are odd on there, a lot of them are just trying it on to see what they can get away with.

Never know, you might be able to fetch more if a new SLI Alienware isn't released.
