I got a serious offer today for 2900.00USD for my current setup....plus I have some Dell credit set aside.
Hopefully the right info will come to light to help me decide while the offer is still fresh. :(

I may just end up burned out on all the hype, and keep what I have............

Might just be the M18X R2, but when I reinstalled windows from scratch (NOT Alienware respawn) - I don't get that in games.

I do get the Fn - F7 to switch to integrated graphics still.

You'll endup with the exact same system plus msata/hdd, minus WirelessHD it seems. IMHO, not worth the trouble. If anything, I'd upgrade the GPU.

Ohhhhh......I forgot about loosing WirelessHD. Thanks. I'd have to remove the chip/wires/antena before I sell it. I use WirelessHD on a daily basis. For a looong time I just assumed/forgot that every M18x doesn't come standard with it. Is there a place for the chip on the R2?

If not, I'm gonna have to wait for a price on just the 680M SLI kit.

You can disable that caps lock indicator by going into regedit and disabling a certain key for bluetooth. It is caused by the bluetooth drivers that is why it does not happen immediately on a fresh install.

Intel's version of the WirelessHD standard called Wi-Di does not, from my research, allow you to use your discrete graphics in conjunction, which is fairly limiting.

So any further updates on if the 680m will new better than the 7970m?
I know that it shows being about 5% better in some instances but not running everything at max I ordered and canceled m17x decided to get m18x but is the extra cost and wair going to be worth it or is nvidia outgunned this time seeing as amd still has no official driver up and I'm sure it will increase performance once its out. Of course nvidia has better driver support.
Seen a benchmark on the m17x thread

what would make you guys buy 680m sli over 7970m cf? for me, at least 10% performance over 7970m cf. i'd gladly pay the premium if that's the case.

if the difference is less than 10%, i might go with the 7970m just cuz it's cheaper...

You are correct. To make it work you have to be on the Intel IGPU.

Shoot me a PM with your craigslist ads link addresses.... so I can look them over. I am a professional at selling things on craigslist
I know it works with my 6300.

Just knowing that it is as good as the 7970M's is good enough for me. PhysX, CUDA and stable verde drivers is important to me.

The 680M is able to be ordered on the Alienware site now, and all I can say is D: Dem prices!

    7970m xfire = $550 upgrade
    680m SLI = $1,100 upgrade

Wish I could afford it, but in my particular case, I'm glad I didn't wait for them. I want them, but wouldn't have fit my budget, would have had to drop the processor down to the 3820qm or something instead of 3920xm. :(

Its not even possible to swap this bad boy out for a 3820qm with 680m SLI without paying out the butt would it?

I can't, and my OC'ing abilities are limited by not only my knowledge, but also the BIOs currently :(. I am running 4.3 across all 4 cores with 50-60 max temps without running anything, maxing at around 80 for games. If I run SC2 and encode 1080P onto twitch.tv I get 90+ so I have to run that at around 4.0 and even then its upward 88 range....

Wondering if compensating a little CPU power, for GPU stability and Nvidia features is worth it, considering the QM processors can be a bit OC'd as well now right? Should I do a return and reorder with 680M and a lower CPU if I get the chance before my days run out? Don't know if its worth it or not....

ok. if they are gonna charge 100% more than 7970m CF, can i expect at least 25% bump over 7970m CF?

i don't necessarily have a problem with the exorbitant price they are asking but i'm having a hard time justifying the purchase if the performance is ~10% or less bump over 7970m CF as people speculate...

dont see that happening any time soon. :D
very good question...or you can save with just a cpu swap. still waiting to hear the end results which haven't seem to come to full light yet.
both cards are pretty close at stock...i guess it's "what do you get when over clocked". since that's where a separation would happen if there is one.

sort of like the 580m vs the 6990m....

as far as cost goes....nvidia will always cost more. just like intel will always cost more than amd. it's just a fact of life....

This can't be true or we just have to wait for a proper drivers to come out.. Nvidia can't just be beaten by 50% in Max Payne 3 and by 100% in BF3 be 7970M!

If you look closely, it's for a single 680, there are no benchmarks posted for 680 sli on that page. Looks like 1 to 1, the 680 has the 7970 by 7% and I noticed on the alienware website, when configuring, it's another 550 for 680 sli.

LoL, wow, and thats with the so called messed up AMD drivers.
I would never pay 100% price difference for something 7% slower.

And yes, according to those benchmarks the hd 7970m beats 680m in almost all the games.

Nvidia needs to get their act together on their pricing. I like nvidia cards (have had them on desktops) but when it comes to mobile, they charge premium price when competitor is almost as good. Minus features like physics(who cares) and cuda and stuff..

its very hard for me to justify the price difference. I think the 680m sli option should be no more than $100-$150 above the 7970m if anything.

You got that backwards. The 680m beats the 7970m by 7%. But that 7% costs you quite a bit. But who knows after a year of drivers who will be better. I bet 680m will pull ahead by a decent margin 10%ish. I cancelled my CF 7970m order (m18x) and I am going to pay the extra for the 680m SLI configuration--not because it is worth $550 more for 10% gain or whatever it is, but because everyone on here convinced me that Nvidia WILL provide good drivers and keep their cards working very well and that AMD doesn't do this or atleast there's no gaurantee of timeliness of this and I ain't paying $3500 for a top of the line laptop I have to 'dink' with. No way.

Well... now looking at all the game benchmarks I see the single 7970m does beat the 680m in many games... so I don't know. I'm confused :).

    680m NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M - Notebookcheck.net Tech

    7970m AMD Radeon HD 7970M - Notebookcheck.net Tech

    am I right or wrong?

All these talks about poor drivers again...lol. I've been using my 6970MCF on 8-months old drivers and had zero-zilt-zipp issues in games. I have played most of the new titles and never had a problem. It's when people start messing with drivers for extra 1-2% FPS increase and for boasting/benching purposes - then it can get messy. But hey, to each - their own. You like to pay extra for CUDA and Physx? Be my guest. But I don't buy that drivers cra* after having enough of issues with both the Green and the Red team in the past. They are equal, IMHO. :)

I got some additional info from my Dell rep yesterday - he said the 680m should be launched on the UK webbsite on Monday. Pricing for a single he thinks is to be around £450-£480 and for SLI £800-£890.

If that's correct, I'm pretty pleased as I was kinda expecting a tag of £1100gbp for SLI. At those kind of prices, it puts us on an even footing with US prices (of course that would include the usual 20% that gets extracted from our pockets by the UK's tax robbing politicians lol)

A lot of the talk of poor drivers stems from the fact that AMD still don't have a set of official 7970M drivers yet - which is annoying to say the least when they've been out for a month.

From what I've seen and heard, nVidia typically has better multi-GPU support. When it comes to multi-GPU, I'd expect the 680Ms to have a noticeable lead on the 7970Ms, at least until AMD get their **** together and produce a proper set of drivers for it.

That said, CFX still seems to work fine in the (few) games I'm playing right now. ArmA 2 and Battlefield 3 both seem to run great with it. (It's pretty awesome to be running Battlefield 3 maxed out and be getting framerates frequently peaking in triple figures.)

About the AMD driver issue - I am not messing around for the extra 1-2% more performance but I am still not able to play Skyrim in CFX with my 5970s in my M17x-R2 and I stopped bothering and wait until M18x-R2 with SLI680M is available in Austria and will buy them. Sorry but for me AMD and their poor driver support and performance is history as this is the 2nd time I made bad experience with them. This also applies for Heroes of MM6, Civ5 and even Saints Row The Third which should be an AMD game as it has the AMD Logo on it. It seems that as soon as it comes to mobile cards (especially dual cards / CFX / SLI) AMD is rather poor on driver support because I have no issues with AMD cards on the desktop side. So green it is for me in the future for Laptops.
