I haven't seen it clock that low. If it did , it should have the original clock display also.

I see your SLI is disabled. Try enabling it.

The GPU's have multiple clock / performance states. One of them, the lowest, when idle is like that, very low.

@Trulyfatal How come you didn't come to me if your having issues?

If your having issues, I need more information, but what we're looking at looks perfectly fine, AFAIK, your not running anything 3D or demanding, the videocards even underclocked saving power in this state are overkill for the Aero desktop theme of windows or the Alienware Desktop background 2D art

What can I do for you ?

Running Windows Desktop is not a measurement of Graphical Performance for these cards. Run fire strike from 3DMARK while the laptop is plugged in.

If you want to FORCE them into higher performance states (and I do not recommend this) you can use nVidia Inspector. But, if you are not that experienced I would stay away from it, until you are more comfortable with it or know how to use it.

**imagine for a minute the 900M series and earlier cards did NOT throttle down when not being used on the desktop... Imagine they were always full clock rates with the fan issues the AW18 has..lol

Even my 980 Ti does the same as these cards, just saying.

If the 364.51 drivers do not work well for you, try different drivers, these came out just yesterday, and no one has given any feedback on them, but it's not the cards fault if the drivers suck. The 364.51 driver is the first DX12 driver for Rise of the Tombraider, as an example, but it doesn't even include the new HBAO+ options yet (VSAO I think it is..)

Essentially, like the hundreds of warnings people give, never try DAY 1 Drivers for stability unless you need them for a specific game. These are a day 1 adoption for DX12 performance.

Anyways still, without seeing performance in a game, how do we know they're not working well. Is it stuck at the same clocks indefinitely ?

You can use nvidia inspector "multi display power saving" (click on "Overclock" button).

As for the throttle, maybe you need a bigger PSU?

The score isn't bad, it's a little low, but stock speeds vary.

You can also bump up two other options in Nvidia 3d Global (or Program) Settings:
    Nvidia Manage 3D Global settings.JPG

OC'ing the CPU and GPU will give you a good boost, it's worth doing. Check my signature for 980m SLI Fire Strike score of 15911.

If you use a custom BIOS/vbios you can score even higher. Someone with my same laptop and Svet's MSI vbios scored over 17k in Fire Strike.

sometimes we chase the most difficult to think troubleshooting steps and miss out on the fact, maybe the preliminary setup options were all it needed, hahah, love it. Great Score too.

Your getting very good SLi performance.

So, anything you can do to remove the negative feelings the original post make towards my name, or brand ?

Like maybe a small edit to the original post, please. People will view the thread, see BAD PERFORMANCE and then see WOODZSTACK and then go "OH NOES!".
    can't have that happening.

There's plenty of performance threads for 980M Sli and AW18

That's a great score and seems in line with 980M SLI at default clocks!

That is an amazing score, especially the Physics score! What frequency is your 5950 at for that 13k Physics score? Damn youre making me want to just move from my M18x R2 to MSI's Titan GT80!

I absolutely love the GT80, it is serious kit, especially the first mechanical keyboard in a laptop.

Congrats and I wish I knew back in 2012 when I purchased my M18x R2 with 680M SLI for more than the GT80 is going for that it would be rendered completely obsolete in only 3 years time.

Now if only MSI get's with the program and releases the successor with a proper G-Sync display that will do at least 90Hz, that is my ONLY gripe with the GT80 and it has to be asked, what the hell were they thinking putting a 60Hz, non G-Sync 1080p display in something that can render all recent AAA titles at 90 FPS at 2560x1440?

Links to the score details are in my signature, and in the CPU details it says 4.1ghz, I got a higher score at 4.2ghz, but got distracted and forgot to save it   o_O

15 911 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M(2x) and Intel Core i7-5950HQ
    Graphics Score 21 345 Physics Score 13 681 Combined Score 5 972

The GT80(S) has been a great series, and the best part is, all of the generations perform about the same in games.

Benchmarks show differences in CPU performance depending on the generation / part, but in reality game performance comes down to the GPU.

All the 980m SLI models perform about the same, the 970m SLI models perform about the same, and same for 965m SLI. It's really great.

I prefer the Broadwell, because it comes with Windows 8.1, 14nm redux of previous architecture + chipset so stable drivers out of the box, 128MB EDRAM - helps a lot for battery iGPU performance - and apparently normal CPU performance. Again, doesn't do much for FPS :)

The upgradeability is awesome, and going to Pascal should be doable and beneficial for more performance as it's supposed to be 2x performance per watt.

I like the look, the form factor, the "low" weight - really it's lighter than your AW18 :)

And the out of the box experience shows that MSI has done extra QA on these, we hardly see any bad / DOA units reported in the GT80 threads:

Ah Windows 8 must be the reason your Physics scores are so stellar, seriously though, my 3920 equipped R2 is only capable of mustering a mid 11k physics score at 4.3GHz and my desktop's 4930k around 16.5k at 4.5GHz (hexa core), so 13.5k from a quad core 5950 at 4.1GHz is truly amazing!

Yes I noticed that the GT80 only weighs 9 lbs, this is considerably lighter than the 12 lbs the R2 weighs!

This has to be one of the best if not THE best DTR's out there, the mechanical keyboard was an excellent and essential design implementation.
