Seems every 10 minutes or so the computer decides to look for a CD in the drive. Makes a searching rattle for a second. I assume thats what the noise is anyways. Anyone else experience this? Its a bit annoying.

I have a DVD drive (with or without a CD/DVD in it) and it does the same thing randomly. I've never really measured the interval as to when it does it. I'd like to know answers as well (but I don't find it annoying at all). It just shocks me sometimes.

Do you use any software for hardware/system info or system monitoring? Almost all that type of software is looking for PC components (checking system) and CD/DVD/BR drives make a short noise on system check.
Also some anti-virus software can provoke that on system scan.
So, may be something checking your system every 10 minutes. -
Well whats strange is today I have not heard it at all. It is the CD rom because it makes the same noise at boot up.

As long as you can live with the mild annoyance of hearing it, that is not really hurting anything. For the reasons Brother @RaSeven mentioned, it's not uncommon and not unique to the 18. I haven't heard the sound in a few years because I have replaced my optical drives with hard drives, but I remember it and it wasn't loud or obnoxious to the best of my recollection.

It has quit altogether now. It did it regular for a couple days and has not done it since. Its just a little unnerving when you get a good deal on a new machine and then think maybe theres something wrong with it is why you got such a good deal.

I replaced my drive with a Sony BD-5850H BD-RE/RW Blu-ray burner and it has stopped making said noise. Only problem is my eject hotkey doesn't work anymore. Not a huge issue as I can eject from in my computer.

All i can say is computers are weird. Mine has not clicked again for a long while. My toshiba qosmio on the other hand decided to tun the cpu at full turbo boost with fans on high for no reason. I shut the machine off for 12 jours and when i started up again the trouble was over. It has come back a couple times, so i just turn the puter off for a while and that fixes it.

Sounds like some background service like your anti virus doing a scan using a lot of the cpu on the Toshiba making it kick into overdrive...But yea computers are weird little magical pandora's boxes...

I even went in and shut down the services that were drawing the highest cpu resources and it still kept the turbo boost on. Thats when i shut it off and walked away before hulk smash.
