Just been on the phone to a UK Dell rep and he confirmed to me that the two graphic card options coming to the m18x are the nvidia 560 and the amd 6990. He said the date will be middle to end of July for the 6990, i didn't ask the date of the nvidia 560 but i assume it will be introduced around the same time.

Just spoken to the same agent and i can confirm they are both in SLI & Crossfire configeration.

    Hope this helps guys.

The only place I've heard anything about the 6990m is on these forums.
Is there any hard info? As blackcomb xt is based on barts pro it potentially leaves room for a product based on barts xt but what?

I don't have any in depth info, what i know i've posted. To be fair, i don't see why a Dell agent would make up what he's told me, he has no reason to.

There should be a competitor for gtx580m, so i consider it as an obvious step from amd to follow nvidia's competition. In a few weeks x7200 from Clevo gains gtx580m sli in its config, so 6990m CF eventually follows next after nvidia launch!

Well without trying to sound pessimistic... I've had Dell reps flat out lie to me on several occassions. Before I was schooled on the screens, I had a rep tell me that the 1200p RGB screen had just a little better resolution than the stock 1080p WLED screen. I was on the phone and he was pushing me to buy and offered me a discount. I didn't have a chance to research it so I went with the cheaper option thinking that the 1080-1200 wasn't going to matter too much. Two days later I learn on here the difference in color and design of the two screens and I was beyond upset. I called him back and he hung up on me when I said I wanted it changed. I had to speak with two different people before they finally said it was already in production and couldn't be changed. They said I'd have to wait for it to arrive and then return it. When it arrived - I called to return it and the rep said I'd have to pay a restock fee and they couldn't honor the same discount if I purchased a new machine so I sat and stewed over it because money was tight. After my 21 day period passed and I started having major issues with the machine, I was looking into the return policy and found that he lied to me about the restock fee. There is no restock fee as long as it is returned in the 21 day period. I really got hosed and I will never forget that.

Granted... apples to oranges. Different circumstances... but point is - they do lie. These lies were just a couple of the many I have caught them in over the last 7 months.

On a lighter note - this does sound pretty cool though not sure I'd want to go with it right away and deal with all the "new" driver issues. :/

Mav i've just gone out of my way and posted info i have, i thought some people would find it helpful and all your doing is whinging, jesus.

The Dell rep i spoke to, i have been in contact with for a good few weeks as i have been considering getting the m18x, the rep has always been helpful and seems respectable enough. I asked him this question a couple of weeks ago about any upgrades, he told me he had no info available at this time. Today i spoke to him, he told me what i've posted. Reason i don't think he's lie'ing...Because i finally made the plunge today and purchased the laptop, before i purchased the laptop i asked him about future graphics cards and he told me, what he knew. He could have just said no, he a saleman at the end of the day he wants me purchasing now not in 4, 5, 6 weeks but he didn't he told me what dell are doing.

Honestly, I dont know how trustworthy reps are. When the m17x r3 came out, many people were curious if 4DIMM slots were available if you only went with the stock 4gb (2x2gb). Many reps said you had to order at least 8 gbs of RAM to get all 4 DIMM slots.

Not that I'm dissing your rep or anything; all of my reps have been fairly knowledgable and helpful.

People in the tech department are the ones that have the best idea on what dell plans on heading in the future. So your rep may be totally right, and the 6990m and 560m may be just around the corner. However, I would take this with a grain of salt. Other people have had reps say similar things to tpeople of here before, and I lost count of how many predictions just failed right out (m18x/m14x release date, m11x r3 release date, 485m in m17x r3, etc. etc.)

I'm whining? Seriously? I sure hope you don't have any issues when your system has problems, but when/if you do - I'll be the first person to be there and help walk you through the nightmare. Free of charge.

Besides, I don't see how I was whining when I simply made a comment about how these reps are NOT all honest. I wasn't bagging on you or anyone else but the people that lied to ME. Call it whining if you want, you inconsiderate brat. But if you want to start calling names and/or getting rude... how about you NOT spread unfounded rumors. I could honestly care less, but if I'm simply "whining" then you're simply spreading rumors. Anyone could make that information up. So do us all a favor and get real, k?

I'm a whiner, lol... some of you "holier than thou" people really just could care less about the world around you or what others are going through. You said you couldn't think of a reason why the guy would lie... well, I just gave you two reasons. Sit and spin buddy. Sit and spin.

    QFE!

haha, whatever man. We'll see come the end of July won't we, if i'm wrong i will apologise. Rumours...i have no motive to spread rumours, all i was trying to do was give the likes of you what i thought might be useful information. Don't worry if i do happen to encounter any problems you will be the last person i come calling to, i wouldn't waste my time and effort dealing with the likes of you, i will call a Dell rep ;)

"Couldn't honestly care less", you could've fooled me, take a chill pill fella and chillax.

Alienware releases new stuff at the same time in different regions or there might be delays compared to US?

While Clevo is willing to cram two heat and energy intensive GPUs, Alienware/Dell isn't be so keen on doing that.

From my experience, when i try to know something about the forthcoming, I listen (carefully) to some guys in this forum (like Joker, Joebarchuck, mfractal, Bat Boy and similars or from Eric @ Posterous). Regularly the reps I have found since 1997 they even didn't know the products and their characteristics. ( must say: since 2005 I had more luck with reps from Costa Rica... They seem to "dig" a little more into the products... and they indeed are somewhat more "friendly").

Doesn't the U.S. usually get the first release of new tech from Dellieanware? I was thinking that typically that's how it is. They've been pretty good more recently about releasing the same stuff stuff in all regions at the same time with exception to the WiHD option in some areas do to legal issues.

You missed the point... again. Wow. I don't care about you posting what "could" come up soon. In fact, I find it interesting. I like to shoot the stuff over upcoming features and products. We're all techies here. The point is - you blew me off and said I was "whining" and it rubbed me wrong. You don't know the half of it, boy. Calling me a "whiner" would be the same as calling you a "gossip queen" or something just because you posted about something that could/could not happen based on your word. That's called a rumor. As far as asking for my help - you won't have to, everything I've been through is posted for all to see and I'm sure you'll find some use out of it as countless others already have. So have fun dealing with your dell rep while I chomp on my chill pills... chillaxing, lol! Seriously, who's the one freaking out here? I commented and you called me a "whiner". Who are you to call me anything? You don't know me and you obviously know nothing of what's going on here. As for you quoting me saying "I could care less"... I don't care what you post. I really don't. But remember son, this is an open forum where people COMMENT on other's postings. That's what makes a forum a "forum", duh. You posted about a new product and said you didn't know why a rep would lie to you. I simply gave you reasons. Don't listen. Don't believe me - it makes little difference to me. I'm posting in an open forum for all to see. Some will appreciate it - other will not. Some will understand and others like you will need to be schooled. That's what an open forum is all about.

So when you need that schooling again when/if your machine comes to you with issues right out of the box and you can't get a rep to listen to you, let alone not hang up on you... again, I'll humbly help out. All you need to do is ask, child. Ask, and you shall receive.

I'm acting like a child, comments like if you want to be "schooled" again...i mean ridiculous man and rather childish.
Go on son, reply and "school" me again as i want be owned again by the almighty one.

All hail the almighty one and be prepared to be schooled... but first, school ME. Wth is "whinging"? There's a chance that I could have misinterpreted what you said by assuming you said "whining" instead of "whinging". So therefore when you say "...bla bla bla i thought some people would find it helpful and all your doing is whinging, jesus", naturally I'm going to assume you're being combative. By saying someone is "whining", you're basically calling them a "whiner".

Now, I didn't bothing looking up the word "whinging"... want to school me there? Want to apologize for being combative? Again, you misunderstood the whole point of my original post. I wasn't knocking you or degrading you or saying anything in a "matter of fact" tone. I was simply responding to your comment with my own experience. They do lie. It's a fact. You don't have to believe it nor do you have to get sarcastic and abrasive about it. That is why I acted the way I did. So if it's all a big misunderstanding, please school ME on it and I'll gladly pronounce to the world that I am a jackass and I will humbly apologize.

Whats the point, even if i tried to school you, i'd get another lecture as to why i never schooled you and how/why i'm wrong and so on, it will just go on and on and on, kind of like the direction its heading now.

Whinging means "complaining" don't give me the, i haven't check :D i know you've been on good old google looking it up, just incase i was to try and school you.

To be fair i jumped the gun, i thought you was complaining about my post, but you wasn't your complaint was with dell reps. I was going to apologise shortly after but then you got all upset and went on some crazy rant and got rather offensive towards me and called me a brat.

As for the dell reps lie'ing i have never said they don't lie Mav, i said the rep i spoke to was helpful and respectable. I'm not daft enough to think they are all the same, i have had my fair share of problems with dell type salesman before. In fact i don't normally deal with them unless i have too, but through a friend who knows this dell rep well, he put me in contact with the rep and he has been great nothing like the rest i've had to deal with in the past.
Another reason as to why i think he is "not" bullsh*tt*** but again if he is wrong i will come on here and apologise.

I genuinly thought by me posting the graphics card information it would be helpful on this forum, i had no other intention other than trying to help by being informative.

Ok, you do realize that "whining" and "whinging" are the same thing right. They're even pronounced the same way. No, I didn't look it up before either... not until now. I thought maybe it was a European word or something. I looked up both words and they are one and the same just spelled differently thus making the "g" silent. I've never seen the word spelled like that. Either way, it's the same word and by you saying I'm just "whinging" is the same as saying that I'm a "whinger/whiner". That's a very nitpicky technicality, but it is what it is and that is why I responded in kind by getting on the offensive side. Not one of my brighter moments in life, but I've been getting alot of comments like that recently because of my posting on how Dell has treated me and others. You were the straw to break the proverbial Camel's back. I could have just as well let it go.

Maybe I jumped the gun, but be honest - you had no intention of apologizing. I mean, I didn't even respond to you calling me a "whinger" until like an hour and a half later. I can't imagine you pondering on it that long and battling your concience over whether or not to apologize, lol! (C'mon that's funny!) Even after I called you a brat, if you'd have laughed it off and apologized then - I'd have followed suit. That's why I tried explaining myself again to assure you that I was not attacking you or your rep. Again, I was just saying that I've basically had some bad experiences and I know alot of others have as well. They do lie sometimes. Not all. Probably not even "most", but deff and alarming number of reps Do in fact lie.

I probably should have not even bothered mentioning it. It was just a "spur of the moment" thing. It was not intended to be a "matter of fact" or "in your face" crazy-man type response. I just wanted to say that you can't always trust dem beeznatches... and then I went into a very long and detailed summary of "why" you can't. I got carried away. My bad. Seriously.

    I wasn't "whingin" though! :p
Friends? You an' me? We could be like...

Oh hey, and one more thing... can you go into all my threads and post that I am almighty? It kinda makes me feel like an uber keyboard-commando! :D

C'mon laugh it man! It's all good. Apology accepted. I too apologize. Brat. Lol, j/k j/k! But for realz, the guy below me? Major brat. And not like a bratty teenage-snot-nosed brat... but like, the cute little cartoony girl toys brat with a "z".

You're the singular word for the "bratz" toy... whatever it may be. Some of us have school all year around cuz we're "big" boys and girls and we got to "big" schools to make "big" moneyz. LOL!

Now see there folks - that thur was sarcasm and was meant purely as a comical release. Thank you. I'll be here all week... and hopefully not another 7 months fighting dell. :/

    Ok.. sooo back on topic!

I've been looking into the 6990's and it would deff be cool if they did something like that but do you guys think there is really much gain from the 6970's? And you think we're going to have to start over with the horrible driver issues again? Not sure about everyone else, but when the 5970 first came out - I had a heck of a time with drivers. The 6970 seems to be alot better though. What I'd like to see is 6-core 960 mother boards! Woot! Even ibuypower.com is selling them in their laptops already! Hard to imagine AW sitting around and waiting. :/

Nooooo, you misunderstood. Man, I must really be bad about getting my point across, lol! What I was getting at by implying that I'm in "big boy" school to make big moneyz... was that, I'm in college (again) and my classes are year round. Actually, going to DeVry right now. Since I'm taking classes year round and straight through and putting in double time... I'll have my degree in half the time it would take to go to a community college and then to a University.

So yeah... this "big boy" is in school right now. :/ It's lame... but I wanna the "big" moneyz. I worked in radio for 5+ years got cut back in November right after I bought my house... so back to school to start a new career. joy. :/

Wow that got out of hand. I hope you guys are done. He over-reacted to when you said his rep was probably wrong, and you got mad at him for his rebuttals.

Let's just get this all behind us.

Btw, if I'm not mistaken, the date of 6/16 (or something else) just passed and no 560m in either the m17x r3 or m18x. Next rumor date is 6/21, anyone wanna place bets?

Dunno if anyone's said it but, one of the M15x guy's has a supposed 6990. It's got 1120 cores and performs a bit better than a 6970.

The 6/21 rumor is from here. Something about 6990 and 580 too. Hopefully better luck with this one!

That is one of things we believe the 6990 will be, either an overclocked 6970, or a 6970 with unlocked shaders (1120). That was ichime's card I believe.

Not sure on the gains from the 6970, but it was supposed to be decent

Its one of them UK-USA translation issue's they occur every so often. You are technicially correct but over here when i say "he's whinging" i mean it like, he moaning about a certain something. To me a "whiner" is someone who constantly complains about things, like a serial whinger, always complaining/moaning, i wasn't implying that was you. I guess you thought i was and explains the tenth degree.
They are not pronounced the same either Mav, when us brits say "whinging" you pronounce it as win-ging, so you hear the G, if we say "whining" its pronounced as "whine-ing" so they do sound different.

Haha, i know it was an hour or so later, i went out by the time i come back on here, you'd had your magic moment.
You are right though, i shouldn't have insulted you, i should have read your post properly before writing a reply, so i'm the cause of this whole affair and for that i deserve a good old fashioned caning, but you'll have to make do with me apologising.

In the context of it all it was actually quite funny, some of the poster must be thinking we're right plonka's (before you ask, go google).
Friends...no chance, your my no 1 enemy, infact a picture of you is going on my dart board, but uhh don't take your m18x info down i might need it in a few week :)

LOL! Good stuff! But dart board? Really?...I'm so... excited! I've never been an archnemesis before! I could have fun with that. But hey, apology accepted and I too humbly ask all for forgiveness. I could have just as easily ignored it. But hey, happy ending... and funny read going back over it. Ok so, I'm off to google to look up plonka... curious if it's anything like a badonkadonk.

Back on topic though... there are rumors about the new NVIDIA card being released the 22nd as well. You think this hype comes from that - maybe they're related? Idk. :/

Any idea what the improvement from xf5870s would be?

I think the 6970s xf offer... 30% increased performance?

These 1120 shader 6970m are engineering samples, when you compare some benchmarks you can see that a 1120 shader 6970m reaches about the same score as a 100MHz higher clocked regular (960 shader) 6970m.

Though the power draw of the 1120 shader card is higher of course.

@Maedhros: In games, a 6970m performs about the same as a 5870m cf (depends on the game of course) In benchmarks, cf scores better.

I have spoken to a few guys over at the technical support. They seem more clued up than the reps (Im having a few problems with the old girl.)

From what they have told me there is definitely something coming out for summer. The 560 is a dead cert as the 460 is a weak offering for the m18. The 6990 was mentioned as well. We may also see a 485m option later in the year.

I dont think its the case of Dell sales reps lying, they just dont know. Its stands to reason that the technical guys would have more info as they have to be trained on the machines before they are sold.

I'm confused, where is the information for the gtx580m? I've only heard of the 560's being anything more than a rumor.

The closest thing is Conjuredevil mentioning that AW hasn't gotten the 580s for testing yet and that maybe they'll be ready for Aug./Sept., at which point it might just be worth waiting for Kepler.

If there's any other news I'd love a link.

There are no 580m's. They are not released yet.

AW is slow in adopting new technology. We haven't even seen a 480 or 485m configuration despite them being available in other systems for sometime.

Talk of an AW 580m in 2011 is pure wishful thinking. The best you can hope for is a 485M.

480M and 485M only made it to 3 laptops - Sager NP728x, NP8170 and NP8150. And given the fact that all other gaming lines were limited to 460M/560M, - no wonder. Only Sager/Clevo has sufficient cooling and relatively low starting price to justify the most power hungry and expensive GPU's. As far as the cooling goes, the M18x and maybe M17x should be able to handle the cards but there could be other issues, like high latency and stuttering (280M SLI anyone? ).

Would you carry 2 power bricks for 485 SLI configuration on your laptop? I was about to go for a Sager, but when looking at their recommendation, I changed my mind right away.

I would be happy with one 485m. I prefer single GPU systems.

There are several laptops with 480 & 485m configs on the market. Rock, vortex and Origin to name a few.

So 580m was confirmed by a few Sager resellers to arrive on Jube 28th. I don't think AW leave 6970m CF as the only high-end choice for their most machine )))
