Heihachi88, in Firefox try switching off "Use hardware acceleration when possible" in the options. It did the trick for my freezes while browsing - I'm stoked :)
Give it a try. I don't any idea's about what you can do in CS and PS

Thanks i know about switching off HW acceleration in FF, also in Photoshop CS5|CS6 i can turn off gpu usage - but then i won't have that smooth zoom etc. That must be fixed for sure! now i'm staying with 12.5 beta untill all bugs will be resolved.

The Adobe Photoshop problems go all the way back to CS3 (the version I have). I am thinking it might be a conflict that has something to do with the 7970M hardware. If it is a driver problem, it is something AMD needs to focus on fixing.

As an observation, a new problem has developed with one of my GPUs. It began last night. I was asked by an Alienware rep to try disabling CrossFire to see how my system behaved using only one GPU. (I found no appreciable difference with CrossFire enabled or disabled, other than my system performance was lower.)

After re-enabling CrossFire, the right (GPU1) has remained stuck at 1200MHz memory speed and I cannot get it to idle down. GPU1 is idling at 15°C to 20°C higher (expected under the circumstances) and equals out under load. Along with the problem, erratic fan activity has commenced. My fans will randomly start running at full speed, then drop back to normal again. I had shut off HWiNFO64 for troubleshooting some time ago, but may have to start using it for fan control because that is rather annoying.

Edit: OK, I got the other GPU memory unstuck. I had to launch a game and then shut it down (the game) and it started acting normal again. It's odd that it remained stuck after multiple reboots, but launching a game corrected it.

One a more positive note, Just Cause 2 has less micro-stuttering and texture flickering than some other titles. It's still noticeable, but not as severe... it's playable.

Edit 2: Dang, GPU1 clocks still keep on sticking. Here is a new error message I haven't seen before.

Oh great, now when I play Arkhamn City for 30 mins or less, it freezes on me using DX9. I mean really? I'm using the 12.7 drivers btw.

Darn. Will this issue be fixed? I can't even do the start up manager. This really needs to be remedied ASAP.

I have tried just about every driver you can use for the 7970 and I am still getting the weird screen flickering as well as the grey/white pinstripes. So far I've seen the pinstripes while gaming (Diablo 3, Lego Batman 2 and Fallout New Vegas) and while doing nothing at all, however it seems to be pinstriping most lately while in Steam, although that could be because I was using the laptop mostly during the recent Steam summer sale. I cant duplicate the pinstriping but I had "luck" in replicating the screen tearing many times a couple days ago logging into and out of Diablo 3 and would mostly do that when on the character screen, that is the only time I've been able to replicate it otherwise it's random like the pinstripes.

Has anyone run AlienAutopsy's gaming test? My 7970M CF fails the gaming test. Everything else passes with flying colors.

Thanks to everyone who have posted their feedback here. We will use all the information on this thread to escalate the issues to engineering.

I ran the autopsy and it's all green too. In addition I have not been experiencing any major issue with my 7970M CF, save opting to play Skyrim with CF disabled.

Too few samples to draw a correlation so how about giving it a try yourself, everyone?

Hey, I actually passed the tests.... Nothing green on my end...?

Passes the Gaming test with no issues... Fails the hard drive seek test on both hard drives???

Have any of you guys tried running the benchmark3d MOD drivers? Thats what I have been using and it seems to be stable....

That's good, Duke. Unfortunately, I can't make the same claim. Seems to be bad GPU memory. Same conclusion from running VMT.

It could be just an anomaly that my video cards are no good. I would not lose any sleep over it. Alienware has your back with the killer warranty. I think 99% of the issues with 7970M are due to lousy drivers.

I swapped sides with the GPUs and it seems my system behaves better than it did before doing so. I believe I have the worse of the two GPUs in the secondary slot and the better one in the primary slot.

That comes and goes. I have not seen the artifacts or pinstriped screen since installing the Catalyst 12.7b hotfix.

I still have issues with frequent TDR errors and once in a while a BSOD. I also still have issues with the GPUs getting stuck in 2D and 3D performance states, but again, those are random and every 6970M and 6990M GPU I have owned before 7970M demonstrated that same malfunction in varying degrees of frequency. I think AMD provides those "features" at no extra charge, LOL.

Some colors don't render correctly some of the time and I still have random freezes. After playing a game or running a benchmark, launching GPU-Z will cause a hard freeze most of the time. Sometimes games freeze at launch on the first attempt. Killing them with Task Manager and immediately launching them again usually allows me to play games. I am fairly confident the freezing issues are due to defective vRAM.

Yea I get the same lockups with gpu-z/hwinfo if I run them after playing a game. Occasional BSOD with something atikmpxxx.sys but surprisingly haven't got the AMD signature colors YET... I have had them with every amd card I have own so I'm sure its coming soon. :D

Have the on screen rivatuner display enabled and run kombuster, press escape to exit and click run again and you will be greeted with some nice colorful artifacts... I can simulate this exact problem with all 3 of my replacements... Mr. Fox, are you going to hit up dell about your defective card?... I really had some high hopes for this card, anyone else notice the laptop locking up if left idle? Not sure if its the video cards or not... but yea I'm getting that all the time now at work when I go for my cigarette breaks... I can usually pull the AC adapter out and it would unfreeze.

It's the only driver that appears to even remotely work. Last friday they swapped my AMD graphics cards after constant problems with the cards/drivers. These cards appear no better (6970's). Getting slpashes of color and my external monitor will just go dark, then I have to restart computer. When I play movies I will get the occassional lock up where I need to restart. Already performed a clean reinstall of OS and I'm not looking forward to another one until I get second SSD for raid. I'm not even an overclocker, can't these cards just work? MR. Fox it appears both nvidia and AMD add fail feature set to all the high end notebook graphics cards.

Bloodroses, I had excellent results with GTX 580M. It's a great GPU. I haven't had an AMD/ATI GPU that works correctly since 5870M. (I had great service with the ATI 5870M and the ATI 4870M CrossFire setup in my M17x R1 is still kicking.)

Still no update on this? What is going on?

This needs to be rectified ASAP.

Oh yeah, just let you know if you play Arkham City on dx9, it will crash to a dark screen with music playing on. FYI, my friends. This is driver related for sure.

makes me wonder this thread , i have had my R2 roughly 2 weeks now without issues with my 7970 CF .

i am hitting some amazing FPS in BF3 , Batman arkham city and MW3 , after loads of reading here in waiting for my machine to arrive . i went with Mr Fox's advice run a fresh install of windows and install 12.7b and never looked back ..

i am not trying throw fuel on the fire here , just trying to understand what could be the big issue ? major batch of faulty rushed out 7970m's perhaps ? or the 7970m's dont like the R1 ? who knows ? but i agree these issues should have been sorted out before shipping to the end user !

My 7970M CF system is not having those issues. Alienware is working on getting things sorted for me. I know they's come through with a good solution. They always have.
In fairness, I don't know that issues could be sorted out before shipping to the end user if none of the issues were present during testing. It's impossible to fix a problem when you are unaware of one, and it's impossible to predict a future change in circumstances. If you have a good set of 7970M cards, there are no significant issues that need to be sorted. Still some driver bugs, but no hardware issues when you have a good set of cards.

It is understandable that someone not experiencing issues would have a hard time connecting the dots. It's not throwing fuel on the fire... it's actually encouraging to know it works well for some. I'm very happy to know that, and I appreciate the posts from people whose systems are working correctly. It provides hope in what would otherwise be dire straits. If you look around the forum, it is obvious that the M18x R2 systems that don't work properly outnumber the 3 or 4 M18x R1 owners with 7970M cards installed. I know of at least two M18x R2 owners that have needed their 7970M GPUs exchanged and at least two M18x R1 owners that have seen 7970M graphics cards operating flawlessly. Heck, even some M17x R2 owners have 7970M CrossFire working without issues... So, the R1 comment is merely an inaccurate assumption. The M18x R2 has some added value in terms of the PCI-e bus bandwidth, but that is not relevant in terms of function and compatibility, only performance potential. It's similar to using DDR-1600 in a system that only operates up to DDR-1333 speeds... 100% compatible. The older GPU modules (6990M and 580M) would also be compatible with the M18x R2, but there is no incentive to install the older/slower GPUs in the newer system.

The 7970M GPU is definitely compatible with the R1. If you noticed, I was pretty much elated with things for the first few weeks, other than lack of driver support. The 7970M GPU is a tremendously powerful graphics card with huge potential, and I was very pleased to begin with. I think your thought about faulty components nails it. There is no other reasonable explanation for some systems to work extremely well and others to work poorly. Mine worked pretty much flawlessly at first... then gradually developed into having issues, which suggests hardware failure. There were some rather serious driver issues, but most of them are resolved for me with the Catalyst 12.7b hotfix drivers.

Although I will not be posting it as a solution here on the forum, I have found a way to make most of my usability problems go away using an old tweak that helped with similar functionality issues I had with 6970M and 6990M video cards. Other than what seems to be faulty vRAM chips, I'm no longer having many serious usability woes... At this point, the lingering issues are the screen sometimes going black with DX11 games and benches, and occasional BSOD suggesting vRAM problems. (Alien Autopsy also identified video memory problems with my cards.)

I've seen texture flickering in games, and especially Heaven 3.0 benchmark. I got the cards replaced which fixed the issue, but I am definitely seeing a few spots in X3 Terran Conflict where I have some texture flickering. I'll be trying out others games as I can to see if this problem is there / worsens like it did last time.

EDIt: I am using the desktop 12.7 betas direct from AMD's download page.

Yeah, I'm getting it on the 12.7 beta but not as much as I was getting it with the 12.6 WHQL. Since StarCraft2 is the only game I'm having the problem, I decided to re install the whole game. It's still doing it.

I almost always use MSI Afterburner for recording. For me, it does a better job than FRAPS, and it is free. I purchased FRAPS not too long ago and I don't see that it offers many advantages.

I am finding that Catalyst 12.7b hotfix works better than any other AMD driver with my 7970M CF setup. [ Download Catalyst 12.7b hotfix]

Truth be told, the non- Alienware (for now) 680Ms have a LOT more overclocking headroom than the 7970Ms from what I've seen so far. We'll see how long they can hold extreme voltage / OCs before fizzling out...

Let's try to keep the discussion focused on AMD 7970 Driver and M18x R1 and M18x R2 compatibility. The GTX 680M seems to be very awesome, but it is off topic here. It's OK to make a passing reference to it if there is a point of relevance to be made.
