Since the GTX 10 Series seems to be an issue I figured I would bring a cheaper maybe possible alternative to the table. There is an RX 480 MXM Card however I have not seen any benchmarks on it to date. It seems to be a relatively cheap card. Was wondering if anyone knew any information about it? I have read it doesn't work in clevos as it has the Dell/Alienware Temp module so that's a bonus. Mainly looking for an upgrade for 980M SLI owners, since we are kinda stuck lol. If anyone knows anything about the card please fell free to add that information below.below I have added what looks to be an image of the card and specs of the gpu

Also curious about this.
Also curious about if the Alienware 18 can run both AMD and Nvidia GPU's in the same system. As I want to play with physx in the future as well.
Would be easier for me to go with an Alienware 18 as a secondary machine as opposed to my other solution.... -
I use its my only system, so unlike others upgrades a little bit more of a deal to me lol

For sure, we may have different levels of priority and general end goals but I still hold interest just as you do
I want to play with AMD + Physx the issue stems from the last AMD card on MXM 3.0b is I believe the m290x 4GB which is (as you likely know) just a refreshed 7970m + 2GB vram.
I have my Alienware 17 right now but if its that much cheaper than the GTX 1070 then I wouldnt mind a dip in performance to achieve a higher price/performance ratio. Im a broke student, I like P/P quite a bit lol. -
RX 480 MXM has no LVDS support either, same problem as pascal.

Only eDP?
Ill have to read up on how they got the 1060 working, unless thats an inaccurate parallel scenario?
Might have to can the idea of AMD + Nvidia in one system then -
I do have the latest revision of the 18 that came with 980Ms pre installed, I heard rumors of it having an eDP display, however I opened it up for repasting and ram/cpu swaping but it looks like eDP I could send a pic to double check to really end that rumor as you all on here may know more about these connectors than I do. since its eDP only it would work in SG Mode then Yes? so you would hav 3 options, 1060, 1070 (I think), 980M or 480. shame that SG doesnt support SLI.
-
those rumors have zero merit to them, there is no edp on the alienware 18, it doesn't even have traces on the motherboard. your options are 1060 or 1070, both requires sg, both require to grind the heatsink. I need to make this a sticky at the top of this board, tired of answering the same question 20 times.

Shame.... A 1080 would work in SG Mode also correct? I mean there is alot of room in the AW18 from what I have seen so should fit... Wish we could get SLI Working for an SLI Compatible Laptop...
-
problem with the 1080 is there is no functional vBIOS that isn't ridden with throttling, pretty much crippling the 1080.TheDantee likes this.
