I can hardly wait to see how the M18xR2 Über-Beast runs with 980M SLI. Should fall right under the Panther/9570/P570WM with 4930K in terms of beast-factor, with the Alienware 18 in third place for a wicked trio of laptop domination. GTX 980M Ultrabook gamers with wimpy HQ CPUs should run for cover and dial 911.

I am eager to break all of my Mobile XM + 780M SLI records...

I am still waiting to find out if they plan take me up on the offer to test functionality on the M18xR1, M18xR2 and Alienware 18. Would be nice to have proof for upgraders in this community that it works well on all three of these machines.

Yeah, homey don't play dat BGA game. No way, Jose. Don't care what GPU(s) it has if the CPU is BGA it's not an option, period. :D

Play? I am a FPS guy... no likey RPG or MMORPG or Strategy, and most Indie games are junk. So, Crysis 1/2/3, BFBC2, BF3, BF4, COD:WM2/3/BO/Ghosts/AW, Metro and a ton of other fun stuff. If it is FPS I almost always love it. If it is third-person shooter, I often (not always) like it. Max Payne 3 is a great TPS.

I don't do single GPU machines, especially not laptops, but not working on any Alienware is a terrible shame and a tragedy. I hope that gets sorted for the M17xR3.

Hopefully it will work on M18xR2 and AW18. If it doesn't ever work on the M18xR2 then I will probably go back to desktop unless Clevo releases a replacement for P570WM with X99, 5960X and 980M SLI. If they do that I might stick with laptops, just not Alienware. I will not consider upgrading the Alienware 18 to 980M SLI unless it works excellent in the M18xR2 first. Since it is the superior machine, I will just stop with the M18xR2 not working with 980M SLI and move on to something else without doing any upgrades. I'd like it to work in the M18xR1 as well, but if it does not that won't be a deal breaker. I would just drop my 780M SLI in the R1 and upgrade the R2 and that will be great.

I bet you'd like an FPS game where the enemies are BGA supportors/workers/CEOs.

    Hey there,

quick question. My house is filled with calibrated plasmas and when I go back to my m18x r2 screen I get pretty disappointed. So, what I was wondering is if I buy a half decent 1440p monitor, will my beast be able to give me a good gaming experience (max out at least 1440p) if I were to upgrade to 980m gtx sli? I'm not sure how well the video cards will translate to an external monitor...

    thanks.

Even with 780M SLI doing 1440p gaming is great. Look here at this post for an example. If you drop down to High from Ültra and tweak a few things that add bloat without much eye candy, even your 680M SLI will probably handle it pretty well on most games.

Yes I went with a 1440p 144hz monitor because the power of the 980M in SLI lets you go past 60hz 1440p. The 780M cards should work well.

I forgot to say thanks on the compliment for the scores. Yes, me too. I am overclocker/bencher first, gamer second. Games are just another way to do benchmarks. "Smooth, playable framerate" is just a nice way of saying ordinary. I like seeing games shredded by awesome hardware.

You're welcome. I'm right there with you on being excited if it works on the M18xR2.

Which one is your R2 Fox? :D Custom paint job?

How did you change the colour? Is the Alienware 18 paintable?

    I hate silver.

Also, incredibly beautiful collection of FINE hardware.

The beasts change their clothes daily, so I can't keep 'em straight any more. ;)

Serious though, the R1 guts are now in the pearl yellow chassis in the foreground. (The yellow chassis is an R1 base and I had no place for mSATA to mount, so I moved the R2 guts into a black R2 chassis.) So, the R2 is the black one in the middle. I have a new Nebula Red R2 lid and base for it sitting in my spare parts closet. I have been waiting for the Liquid Ultra to wear out and need a repaste, but there is no sign that is going to happen any time in the near future, so I will probably do that sometime in the next month or so. Maybe I will wait and seek what shakes out with 980M SLI and just take it apart once. I have brand new factory-fresh 100W NVIDIA heat sinks and new SLI bridge cable that I have been saving for about 6 months for the next best GPU upgrade, and it looks like 980M SLI could be the lucky winner.

Take it apart completely, remove everything you don't want painted (black plastic trim in the ports and front of lid, alien head logo, etc.) and take the two bare metal pieces to an auto body shop if you don't have the time and tools. Then glue all of the trim back where it belongs and cinch it up again. It's not hard, except for the plastic trim is a bugger to get glued back on correctly, especially the trim across the top edge of the display.

I would totally love an Atom Green overall colour, then put on a darker green-stenciled nVidia logo just below the Alien head to seal the deal.

I had a really tough time deciding on yellow or green. I was almost sold on candy apple green, with a pearl cobalt as plan B, but then my bud at the body shop showed me the Corvette yellow pearl color and it was to die for. There is no way any photo can capture how great that color looks, but if you find a 'vette painted that color and see it in sunlight you'll have an idea. The cool thing about pearl colors is the mica flip-flop as you change lighting angles. It changes from a super bright canary yellow to almost a tangerine or "hugger orange" look depending on the angle of lighting.

I think most people that have been hanging out here any length of time have already seen it, but for those that no idea what we are talking about here is a slideshow I put together right after it was reassembled, before I added the black stripe.

That carbon fiber overlay looks really great and was tastefully applied. Thanks for share that with us. It's always cool to have some sort of personalized touch to these wicked SLI powerhouses. Doing it in bold ways without having it cross over into something tacky and garish is an art form in itself.

They have no warranty that is valid if you buy a 980 for an alienware, also, if they send you a DOA card they still can charge you 15% restocking fee, ALSO, they are allowed to invoice you ASAP and no time frame is given when they will send the cards out. They also state, you may only ask for a refund within 15 days of the invoice date - which is the day you place the order, even if you only get the order 30 days later, you missed your refund or exchange date.

Read the fine print on the things they make you accept. There are also tons of spelling and grammatic errors in it. Like someone created it for the fun of it, not a lawyer, so nothing is even actually technically legal, but they will try and give you a hard time over it. Presumably.

Looks like a scam to me, thats my final thoughts. Maybe its not, but, seems like if something goes wrong, your screwed, according to what you accept as a disclaimer and such when placing an order.

^it's just standard CYA wording really.

I bought a couple of Clevo fans from them, and had one that was faulty on arrival (grinding noise). Contacted them and they were happy to cross ship me a replacement, even though the website said it accepted no returns and 15% restock.

They can be a bit overpriced for certain things yes but in my dealings with them they've been quite reasonable.
