I picked mine up in mid 2012 and other than the hard drive I've done nothing more than maintain it properly. I've had no reason to upgrade the 3920XM CPU or the 7970m's as they have been performing flawlessly and still play any game i want at 1080p on high settings or better. Overclocking is something i have toyed around with but again...have not even rally needed to do that. It's really been a great laptop and such a shame that Alienware will no longer be making the 18 flagship's...but we can really blame Intel now can't we.

I have a stock M18x R2 with 3920XM and dual 7970Ms and I could not be happier. Cool temps all around and super performance.

You obviously haven't been around long... (unless you're being sarcastic) I'm suprised there is still a 7970m CF configuration that hasn't died to be honest. Almost everyone who's owned them on this forum has had them crap out... myself included.

Well i'm at 2 years and some change on my 7970's and they have not shown any signs of problems. Either I'm lucky or they are just good cards.

They sure run cooler in the M18x then they do in the M17x. My idle temps are like 47-50 degC, where it sued to be often around 55-57 in the M17x. I've seen them top out at around maybe 65 degC, which as me very very happy.

Good thermal paste is what you need.. my 3940XM is idling @ 47-50C now in my M17x R4... So nothing epic about your low idle temps in R2 :)

Mine run at stock since the beginning. I still can run all games in ultra except somes like ASC Unity (which is more of a nVidia game I think).
My secondary card died a month ago, but I called Dell and they sent me a card so I can replace the dead one.

I am really happy with my purchase!

Damn that sucks! I had the same happen to me. PM the service tag? I've got a lot of connections because mine was stolen too.
