Do you get 24k graphics score on 3dmark11 performance?
If not, I think you can do something.

From what I remember of Peter's issues, there were two:

    1) Auto Fan Table GPU Throttling Bug at 72degC
    2) sli performance results lower than expected.

Your suggestion of running 3DMark11 is a good one. If he runs it with manual fan control then that would answer point number 2 (because that would bypass problem number 1), and we could see if there is some kind of an issue with sli performance. And if he ran it with Auto Fans then that would just prove the 72 degC Auto Fan Table Throttling Bug again.

Well while playing game, auto fan profile wont let GPU to touch 72C at all, when it reached to 63C fan kicks in. I did turn all possible settings to extra, and game run so smoother at 68-80% gpu usage. Now when doing benchmark (3DMark, Heaven) on auto fan profile, fan wont kick in till gpu temp. reached to 72C. I dont know what is wrong init. Anyway we need to perform more test to figure it out. I will install more game tomorrow, especially Crysis 3 :).

Hey we are testing 980m sli in the same system.
    I get 24k graphics on 3dmark11.
So you should be able to get that too.

I dont think there is 72 C throttle. I purposely OCed to make GPU above 72C.
    They dont throttle.
But the boost clock sucks. I wish someone can make unlocked vbios that can kill this boost thing.

I'd be surprised if the fans kick on at different temperatures depending on whether your run a benchmark or a game - I see no distinction & difference as to why the Temperatures vs Fan RPM would be different. I'm more inclined to think that you perhaps didn't notice when the fans came on & when they didn't, which accounts for you thinking there's a difference.

I tried to run 3dmark11 twice yesterday, unfortunately 3dmark11 stopped responding on physics test.

I think SLI performance problem is solved now i compared my system Firestrike score with godfafa. Now it is only 280 points difference, even tho his CPU clocked at 4.7 and mine 4.3.

If you failed due to that reason, your CPU need more voltage.
Not being able to pass 3dmark11 physics is not good.
You will sometimes randomly black out.

Yes i sort out CPU voltage issue, as turned down clock. Actually i searched about 3dmark11 stopped responding at physics test, it may bug with installation. i did notice that whenever i do launch 3dmark11, it ask update required. I updated 3dmark11 twice already, still on next launch it shows update available.

A fresh install is a good start, hopefully that will fix your Auto Fan Table bug, and provide you with undeniably perfect sli performance! If you have the same system as Godfafa, and the cards are the same, then I don't see why not. And definitely turn the CPU overclock way down at a super stable setting during your installation & testing, if your CPU is unstable all manner of weirdness & corruption can occur!

Did someone found a way to make 980m SLI work onto the M18x R2?? Sorry I didn't read all the threads.

Peter, First and foremost congratulations on putting 2 980GTX cards in your AW pc. I've been reading this threading from the beginning and it seems you went through a lot to get them to work. Now with that said, I am sadden to know that my AW 18, is not capable, at this moment, of doing what a supposedly older model AW pc can do. It feels so great to have spent so much money for a top of the line pc, that cannot do, what an older model can. That ugly Clevo model with the duel 980 SLI is looking better and better.

Aw18 do support UEFI boot, so i think it will work with 980ms without any problem. This configuration is not tested yet tho.

Even if I could upgrade to 980Ms I wouldn't because they're not covered in the warranty by Dell....despite being an upgradeable machine.
I want to so badly though.

My understanding is that your laptop would still be covered by your initial warranty, just not the new cards you bought, so if you had a problem with it you'd have to put back in the old cards for them to do any warranty work on the laptop.

Thanks for sharing, game @ 120Hz with G-sync enabled would be smashin :)

As@Robbo99999 said, your system will cover under Dell warranty, just 980m cards wont.

It's depend where you located, In US RJ Tech is cheapest i think.

I understand, I just meant that if you had a problem with the 980M cards, you'd be shelling out a lot of money to replace them, since they're not under warranty.

Thx, was looking to use an external display with higher resolution than 1080p just to make those 980m sweat a little. Then I remembered the stutteri g when fps dropped below 60 so was looking for gsync to be safe if any game can bring the 980m sli below native refresh rates.
So far been eyeing either the Asus @1440p or the Acer @4k but wary of stuttering. Any ideas if these 980m sli can handle gaming @4k > 60fps or @1440p >120 fps, maxed out quality settings of course :)

RJ Tech maybe the cheapest route, but they have a no return policy, soo i would highly recommend HIDevolution as they offer warranty on their products and provide a complete upgrade kit for $850

As @cloudfire said any Clevo 980M will work with Alienware M18x R2, if you want 2X980M then ask seller about vBios V12 cards. It will work with Aw18 but configuration not tested yet. Clevo 980m is not compatible with Aw m18x R1.
In Europe, it is hard to get at lower price, there are 2 Ebay seller but price is rip off £650+

I come to the understanding that any Clevo vbios will work too just that V12 somehow is better with SLI but V10 will also work with SLI?
Yeah, I cant believe hos much the resellers are ripping people off with these sick high prices. I believe there is one reseller there that charge like 800$ for GTX 970M :/

Huh, why are you headed for Clevo? The link I posted just show that RJTech ship 980M/970M international too.

In Norway you pay lovely 25% tax/VAT.
    900$ GPUs suddenly cost $225 more :p

A nice way to force Norwegians to buy from the overpriced shops here. But nobody sell GPUs here anyway

980m sli seemed to work great but now I think it does not for me.
Sli randomly disappears. I can get it back only byI reinstalling windows8.1

Right after new windows installation, they work great. But randomly Sli just disppear. And after its disappearance, I cant get them back. DDU and nvidia driver wont help. I need to reinstall windows.

First I thought this was hardware problem. Changed Sli cable, and switched the two 980m around but problem remains. Also tested each for single gpu tests but single is fine. Tested unlocked A10 and stock A12 but same.
Nothing helps but reinstalling windows 8.1.

I also thought it might be due to the mobo, especially the 2nd gpu slot problem. so i got back my old 780m sli but 780m sli works perfect.

    anyone any idea?

What I am gonna test is testing 780m sli in windows 8.1 uefi. I havent tested this configuration.
