Actually there was a laptop spec'd fairly close to mine for a little over $2k (I paid $2.4k) but it was already gone by the time I refreshed the page.

the only reason they are overpriced is because there is no 20% coupons at the moment and also the m18x with a 460 come on dell

    $1800 for a M18x with a 2720qm and dual 6970's. That's about a $600 savings, at least.

I'd be tempted on this one if there was a coupon out. Completely pimped out with dual SSDs. Regular price on this config is like $5K

Yeah I had a chat with the dell rep online and he said since the last coupon applicable for the Alienwares got expired on the 24th of August, it will be a while before we get another one of those coupon offers.

In a way it doesn't make any difference to me now since the M18xs were not up at that time.

Figure with close to 100 of these m18x's out there they would be willing to at least give a modest discount over the phone

Thank you for your reply Gonzalez. I was almost close to begging with the dell guy on the online chat and he said he cant given any discounts if he cant apply coupons :(

Are you sure if I call it makes a bigger difference in getting discounts?

Plus Labor day is coming up, usually they have like coupons for 10,000 redemption. They had so last year atleast.

I really like to get the M18x even in a single card configuration, I like the idea of a large 1080p 18.4" screen.

I don't think so. I'm going to have it mailed to my parents, and then have them ship it over here via APO, so the postage wouldn't be more than $30.

Last deployment to Iraq I ordered a Sager and hand carried it back with me and never had to pay customs on it.

I think I'm going to wait until my account is credited before i bite the bullet on any of these. Hopefully by then they'll have a larger selection of 6990m CF machines, and maybe a discount code.

Am hoping on the labor day 20-25% discount coupons. They had them last year.

Thanks Gonzalez I will surely keep that in mind.

You think a bit good talking could get me further discounts on top of a valid discount coupon? :p

im beginning to think that some of you may be looking at this wrong.
refurbished doesn't always mean it's junk. allot of times, people couldn't really afford it or they wanted something cheaper. so they returned it. you get an outlet item that has a minor flaw..buy dell warranty and then have them come out and replace it. these are steal deals. i paid 2360.00 for my dual 6990's/2630qm...but i also have next business day service as well... :)
and apparently you guys aren't looking but 2920xm!!

I for one have used plenty of refurb laptops for myself and bought many for others, So far, all great except for minor blemishes here and there on rare occasions. Completely agree they ain't junk. :)

Thats a sweet deal there given that the standard base price starts at $1999!

I won't let go of my G73JH, I love it for the price/performance I get from it. :D Somehow the feel of this thing is like an muscle car, we know it cant beat the latest greatest but it still has some sort of x factor to it if ya get my drift.

But the m18x is a very attractive investment. My budget cant reach 2k USD so if I can get a good deal on a single HD 6970M based M18x I would be very interested. Or unless some coupons come by.

I am definitely saving up for a M18x thats in my budget range. If I cant get one I might have to settle for a refurb M17x R3 in a few months time. Those are good laptops too with good cooling and power bricks to handle some good cards in the future.

Hey since you made the switch, how much larger is the M18x compared to the G73? I thought the G73 was a tab bit larger than the M17x R3 because of its bulky and shapely body work.

you sell the g73 and grab the outlet model for a few hundred more.
    the g73 is lacking:
dual usb 3.0 and extra usb charging port.
    sata3
    smaller screen
    hdmi in
    bright back lit keyboard
    decent sound

whole lot of nice features...in the 17r3 and the m18x

At the outlet store this is what comes on most systems

Alienware M18X: 1 Yr Ltd Warranty, Basic Service after Remote Diagnosis (Included In Price)

EDIT: Oh sorry you were asking whats best to buy. I thought you were interested in knowing what comes with it.

Seems like they take around 100USD per year for every additional year, though its a little cheaper when you buy more than a year. Not by much though.

Yeah, one day 20% coupon. I don't need a laptop, but I used the coupon to scarf an Alienware Aurora R3 loaded w/ Radeon 6990 + i7-2600K for $1149 shipped to replace my aging desktop which will now be broken down and sold for parts most likely making my total upgrade cost around $500 when everything is said and done.

And am keeping my G73JH for my girlfriend :)

I am not sure but I might sell one of the HD 6970Ms if feel one card will cover my needs. I was really after the 18.4" screen and the cooling performance of this beast for future upgrades.

i would not sell that other card if i was you...besides...once you see that first game or benchmark...you'll smack your self for even thinking of selling... :D

you could have just got the 460m if that was the case. :D

:p absolutely not the horrid GTX 460M, the 5870 is just plain superior to it and overclocks well enough. I always wanted something like the 6970M or 6990M.

I have seen most of the benchmarks for the m18x, I know I will loose a lot out by selling the card but I have to think about the future as well. I am sure I wont have the funds to buy two new 7000Ms and change these suckers. Well maybe once I have a fulltime job in the fab/VLSI industry. Hmmm... right now just a struggling grad student.

8000Ms in the future maybe good IF they stick to MXM 3.0b. Lord knows.

You are right though, something to think about. Will see if I can avoid having to sell it.

Mine said Red on both. I'd prefer black, but for that price I can't complain.

If anyone else wants one of these you better jump on it. I think there were only about 4 left, with 6970's, when I ordered mine.

Thats interesting, its already shipped for you. Mine's in In-production mode.

Which is strange, whats there to build in an already configured laptop

I think he probably meant "that's the shipped price" as in "after tax, S&H, fees, etc." rather than "it shipped already" :)

If not, dang that was quick!

As for in-production, well.. they have to pull it off the shelf and stick it in a box, right! :p I imagine they would do a simple burn-in QA type test as a last step before sending it off, too.

Yeah makes sense, they need to pack 'em good.

Will these units have the cap, mouse, pad those fancy goodies? Not that I mind not getting them.

But the cap was goofy enough for me to like it. :D

True true. The same with the M17x R3s

Yea, that's what I meant. I was refering to the price, not that it's already been shipped.
