Going on a trip back on memory lane now, but does anybody still have or remember the 2720QM ES chip revision Q154? Some called it the 2920XM engineering sample chip, as it had 8MB cache and unlocked multipliers. Did this work with BIOS overclocking in the M18x R1? I wanted a 2920XM/2960XM but the prices are beyond ridiculous for a 4 year old processor, but I found a reasonable priced 2720QM ES

My R1 had the 2920XM. It did 4.5GHZ with the stock Dell O/C. I heard of people going over 5GHZ but I never tried mine.

@Raidriar
It is pretty crazy how well they have held their value, but then again its still a viable chip so it sort of makes sense.
I used a 3720QM ES chip on my R2 (still got it somewhere) which was basically a 3920XM ES similar to what you have described only Ivy-bridge (unlocked multiplayer, 8MB cache etc) The bios overclocking worked just fine so I would think (I am not 100% sure) that the same would be true for the R1. It wasn't a great overclocker though, got it to 4.3Ghz with a heap of flex.... my current 3920XM ES is a reasonable overclocker though, that's the silicon lottery for you though. -

CPU is missing AES instructions. World i7-2920XM OC record was beat on this ES -
I see, your question makes more sense now... only problem is the Extreme ES 2720QM (and 3720QM) chips are so rare its not funny, might just have to try it and just sell it on if it doesn't end up overclocking in the bios.

I just decided to go with the OEM/Retail 2920XM, I found one for a decent price. instead of the exorbitant prices they were going for before.
