Any reason why dell has removed the 6990m's from the m18x, and both the 6970m and 6990m from the m17x, on the UK site? It has been like that for a while now.

Probably lack of stock. At the price the 6990's were being sold for vs the 580m, that's quite understandable. I'm sure the 6970m is being phased out and replaced by the 6990m. Odd that they don't keep those for the 'lower price' config and just remove the 460's... those things are terrible and outdated.

I dont think the 6990m has made an appearance on the UK site yet....6970m crossfire is still available as is GTX 580m Sli. The single gpu option is still GTX 480m.

There is another possible reason as to why 6990m Crossfire hasnt appeared on the website.....Dell arent mugs....they know that as soon as it IS listed, it will take business away from those who want the most potent gpu config online - 580m Sli - which, in turn, would hit profits. (as the 580m's must be a huge money-spinner for Dell at that price)

    My £0.02p's worth....

^^Very good point, with the 580m's as the only top GPU option for enthusiasts, Dell can rake in more profits for a few weeks or months from the UK users at least and then add the 6990m. It is strategy.

same for the 6970 if they placed 6990 on there which is actualy cheaper & beter then 6970 ppl would start to ask questions.
so they probally cant sell all there stock 6970 first

what you can do is ask for it and they will have them.
dunno if they have them in stock or just orderable,
caus mine is still somewhere in deadspace ordering

Could somebody please answer my query, i am thinking about upgrading to the 580M, but only if i can install Nvidia drivers, being stuck with Dell drivers is really no good.

Nice, congrats. The audience here is very hungry for the newly released GPU's and their benches (so am I)! 2 weeks to get the system shipped with no options available on the website is impressive indeed)

Try to update to the latest VGA drivers and post your results (benchmarks/temps) ASAP, and a lot of people should be very grateful to you for the input :)

i just had a discussion with Dell Tech Support, they didn't even know that the graphics card existed, they don't know if they have drivers available for them, they don't know if we can use Nvidia drivers or if we are stuck with Dell drivers, they even said that the fact that the Alienware website was selling 580m's a glitch on the page...what morons...i will be selling this Alienware laptop and i am going back to a Asus laptop...maybe the new one with the 560M...at least that one i know we can use Nvidia drivers...what a waste of time and money...

One thing I can say for sure, - never call Dell (tech support or not) to ask about ETA's, availability or specs :)

Even product managers don't always have a clue, lol

Just received my M18x with dual 580's - just tried the auto detect option on the nvidia site and got:

"The manufacturer of this system requires that you download the driver for your GPU from their support site."

Not actually tried downloading and installing yet, but not looking promising...

Just a FYI here but my rep has again given me some insider news. Basically, GTX 560m is now available to configure for m18x in either single or Sli mode. Its also available as single for the M17x too.

Again, this is for the UK so I am not sure about other regions as of now. Its not on the website but he can configure an order with them manually if thats your preference.

Well, i spoke with the Head of Tech Support in Dell UK and he said that he have to take what Dell provides for us, the Dell drivers have been tested and they run fine, and that they will not give any Tech Support if we install Nvidia drivers. I explained to him that, if the graphics cards were from Nvidia, that we could and should install Nvidia drivers or, at the very least, Dell should provide updated drivers with almost the same frequency as Nvidia does. He said that he didn't care what i thought, that Dell had these policies in place and that was it.

Right, to whoever lives in the UK, i would like to swap my Alienware M18X for a Clevo laptop or Asus laptop, any takers?
