That's weird it has just stopped working for you. I wonder what it could be? I tried mine now just to check and it still works..

I don't know. I tried it one time to test HMDI output on the 18. I tried it with 680M SLI and 7970M CF and it did not work back then either. Each time it was testing only out of curiosity, and only one attempt was made. But since I have no reason to use it, I haven't bothered trying to see if there was something I can do to make it work.

    Hello,
I confirm that certain HDMI cables requires grinding the plastic part of the connector to facilitate insertion thereof into the M18!
The HDMI connector M18 is too recessed and does not allow a good connection!

    Bonjour,
Je confirme que sur certains cables HDMI, il faut meuler la partie en plastique du connecteur pour faciliter l enfoncement de celui-ci dans celui du M18!
Le connecteur HDMI du M18 est trop en retrait et ne permet pas une bonne connection!

    Best regards

    @Mr Fox,

Are you suggesting that maybe the HDMI input is dependent on what video hardware or video drivers you have in order for it to work?

My HDMI output works perfectly with both 680M SLi and HD4000 inbuilt graphics once I trimmed some of the plastic off the plug but that same cable will not work on HDMI in.

Maybe it's time to get Dell support to earn their keep and come out and fix it.

    Hello everyone,

So I have been sitting with this issue for over a week and am very frustrated. I have a M18X. When I plug in a second screen with DVI, HDMI etc, the only thing I've gotten it to work on is D-SUB but would like HDMI to work as it has before. The screen stays black and just says no signal detected. The laptop recognizes the screen, it even installs its drivers. I know the screen works because I've tested it on other PCs, I have also tried other screens but they all do the same other then using D-SUB. I reinstalled all my drivers, tried different screens, etc. I even formatted my laptop and reinstalled everything but its still not working.

As you have an M18x R1, there is a well documented problem which affects many R1's. Basically, the HDMI out port of the machine is literally too "deep" to allow HDMI cables to form a proper connection. Many people have overcome this by trimming the plastic plug around the end of the HDMI cable that plugs into the notebook, effectively allowing the metal plug to go further in to connect properly. If you have a spare HDMI lead, I'd give it a go.....have a quick read through this thread - should help:

I have question about the HDMI port on the m18x r2. I noticed that my hdmi cable doesnt go all the way in the port enough to be tightly seated so that it doesnt wiggle. If I wiggle my HDMI cord a little I lose signal to my monitor,. I'm wondering if anyone else has this issue or if my port is starting to go. Is the HDMI out port in the m18x too deep or am I looking at a mobo replacement in the near future? Thanks!

Common problem with many R1 /R2's brother DanDan. I've read here on the forums multiple times, you can carefully shave back some of the plastic shrouding around the head of the HDMI jack to get it to go in further and make a firmer contact.
Don't worry your MB is fine.

The HDMI input and output ports work fine for me on my m18x r2 with dual 680Ms. The output port had a deeper socket, but both worked fine.

Well just wanted to ask if someone found any way to fix HDMI-IN issues, I have tried many different things but nothing have worked for me.

I use the same cable that works with HDMI-OUT but nothing happens.
Tried it with both Windows 7 and Windows 8 but nothing happens.
Tried it without any discrete GPU and with my 780m but nothing happens.

    EDIT: Forgot to say, its a M18x R2 with 780m and i7 3610QM

This might sounds stupid... but wiggle the HDMI cord around abit. I used HDMI-in only the other day and it wasn't detecting an input signal. I almost gave up then wiggled it and applied more pressure into the port and it worked.

I think something with aftermarket GPU upgrades does something to disable it. HDMI input has never worked for me, ever, on the M18xR1 or M18xR2 except with GPUs that were standard equipment. Maybe modding the drivers (which is unavoidable) does something to break it. Since I have no use whatsoever for HDMI input, I haven't seen any reason to investigate why it does not work. I wish the HDMI in port was an extra eSATAp or USB 2.0 port.

Mine still works though. I thought it was broken recently but I tried a few time and wiggled the hmdi around and 'hey presto'. It very sensitive though. One little nudge and it can't find an input signal.

Is Hdmi-in stereo only? When I try to use 5.1 headphones via the 3 audio jacks, the audio is distorted until I restart it using stereo sound.

Playing with the HDMI in I have found the following:

    1. Make sure all devices are turned off.
    2. No video ports have anything plugged in. (i.e. no displayport or HDMI cable)
    3. Turn on Alienware 18, log into windows account.
    4. Turn on the device that you are attempting to connect to the Alienware 18.
    5. Once both systems are on, plug device's HDMI cable to the Alienware's HDMI input.
    6. Activate HDMI input (FN + F8).

There is about a 5 to 10 second wait but works for me. Hope this helps.
