Hi i've recently found myself looking for more graphical power on my m18r2, as my hd7970m crossfire setup is becoming a bit dated. It is however almost impossible to find out which gpu are compatible as lots of sources show conflicting info, and was wondering if anyone here had succesfully swapped their gpu to a nvidia 980m or 1060, and where i can get these cards.
    Thanks in advance

980m SLI or the 1060 and iirc 1070 and WX7100 (RX 480) under SG mode.

@woodzstack is the neighborhood friendly vendor but there is of course ebay and websites of that nature to purchase from.

you can go as high as 1060N and have peace of mind or if you want to spend the money 980M SLI, the 1070 works, but needs special care - like do not expect to overclock it, and do not let it get too hot, generally underclocking or undervolting seems best., Its in general 10% less performance then say, the MSI 1070 would be maybe even more, but close to that. Few people had the card face issues. Wish we really had NVidia behind these cards like we did in the past, but we don't. But 1060N or 980M is super safe bet and plenty of options out there, for 1060N though I always recommend spending the savings you get, on a newer all copper heatsink or 6 pipe one, that will make you NEVER have heat issues ever.

@woodzstack "newer all copper heatsink or 6 pipe one"

Does the Alienware 18 (Viking) have a 6 pipe heatsink for slot 1 and slot 2? or is it only for the R2 model?

980M SLI or 1060 (SG mode) are the best options right now.
