I have the m18xr2 and an Origin Eon-x...looking to put the GPU from the Origin in the m18xr2...

So i have a m18xr2 with a 675m and I am wanting to put the 980m from the Origin laptop in my alienware.... however, the sticker on my Origin Eon-x says it is Gsync. The reason i am wanting to do this is because occasionally my Eon-x screen goes into flicker mode (like a strobe light sorta) coming out of sleep mode, or when i try to play the division you can see the rapid flickering. I already called Orgin and they said i need a new screen to fix that. My m18xr2 on the other hand has no screen issues and i want to upgrade it.

The issue i think i will run into is that the 980m in the Eon15x might not be compatible with my m18xr2.....and i sure don't want to take apart this entire laptop, screen, ribbon cables, keyboard, and all to get to the GPU if the the gsync version of the 980m isn't compatible.

If someone could help me i would be most grateful.

    Thanks.

gsync version is incompatible using PEG mode, you are stuck using the optimus mode.

Will that work correctly in optimus mode? I can play for example, Fortnite, etc without issue on the 980m? In other words, i should go ahead and upgrade the m18xr2? (also thanks for the replies.)

You will take a 5-10% performance hit because it is using optimus and not directly connected to the 980M. Honestly, it's not worth upgrading the M18x R2 any more, just too old. Your origin probably has a eDP display and can probably be upgraded to a GTX 1070 or even maybe a 1080 which will get you much better performance.

i see... alright, if i do this, I will either sell the 980m or put it in some other upgradable laptop down the line. I could always pop a 970m into the m18xr2 at some point to just keep it playing some lower demanding games as the years go by. WHen i put a 970m in the m15x i don't remember having to take apart the entire laptop just to pop a different GPU in it.... thats one thing that has been making me postpone doing this to the m18xr2... i really don't want to have to take the screen off and everything to do it.
