I installed two new drives and did a clean install of everything. Installed all drivers ect but I noticed something different. My fans don't kick onto high when playing games like that used to. I'm getting much higher temps. Ran diagnostics, no problems found but video fan 2 didn't do anything and I'm sure none of the fans are going on high speed like they used to. I check the fans and they're all spinning, just not as fast as they did before. Temps are breaking 70C when gaming now. Help please!

If these are the Samsung 1TB SSD drives that you mentioned that you were going to buy, are you using RAPID? If so, there is a chance that could be causing something unusual to take place, and disabling RAPID might fix the problem. If that does not help, try uninstalling Samsung Magician to see if that changes anything.

How about any third-party software that reads, monitors or communicates with the EC and/or SMI? (HWiNFO64, RealTemp, HWMonitor, OpenHWMonitor, AIDA64 are a few examples.)

Otherwise, I cannot think of any reason that the fans should be affected by your new drives unless there is some kind of a bizarre and rare conflict between drive firmware and the EC.

None of thee above at all. No rapid, no Samsung Magician, none of that software. How can I set them to go higher?

And what are safe temps? What should it not exceed?

I just downloaded Speed Fan and I'm able to turn them super high but I'm not sure how to set everything up.

Ensure you are on BIOS A09 which make the fans actually start running when the temp goes up. Never failed me

Otherwise you might want to follow Mr. Fox's guide on how to set them manually to start at a certain temp threshold using HWINFO

Click on this link then follow the images to manually set up your fan controls for your Alienware 18 laptop.

Do note you need to be on BIOS A08 or later for this to work.

Well, 70°-75°C (even up to 80°C) is not even close to overheating. It makes no sense that changing those drives had any effect on the behavior of your fans. That part is very puzzling.

I agree with Ferris23 on what BIOS to use. In fact, even if you are already on A08 or A09, try re-flashing the same version and maybe it will clear out some kind of glitch. These new BIOS with the locked-down NVRAM storing crap can do some really weird stuff.

You can use HWiNFO64 to manually control the fans, but you may not need to do that if your temps are staying within the safe operating range. If you were happy before and did not need to, nothing should have changed.

True I have an 850 PRO 512GB SSD + 840 EVO 1TB + 840 EVO 1TB mSATA and they have nothing to do with the cooling, it doesn't even relate. it must be something else or your temps are perfectly fine which is the reason the fans aren't kicking in?

I'm 1000% positive they kicked in higher when playing Metro. It blew out with some decent force. Now it's just a soft wind. Could it be updated drivers? I was using older drivers before and now I'm using all the newer ones. I'm noticing some changes like faster internet speed (went from 1.8 to 2.2).

I suppose they're in safe range but they're definitely not acting the same as before.

PS: I just reinstalled the bios and it made no difference.

It might be different than before, but as long as the temps are good and everything is working to your satisfaction otherwise, I would just go with "if it ain't broke don't fix it" on this. The best drivers to use are those that work best. :D

Well what I wanna ensure is simply if you have Windows 7, do not attempt to install any newer drivers from Windows 8.1 I know people get tempted to install the latest Intel Chipset Software/ IRST/ IMEI ,etc from the Windows 8.1 section onto their Windows 7 OS and that does cause problems

Nahhh I would never do anything like that. I only used ones that were W7 or W7/W8.

good, just trying to narrow down the problem if you know what I mean.

Last thing you could try is setting those manual fan controls via HWINFO64

Yeah I might do that. I like my temps low and don't mind the fan noise/energy use.

Maybe dumb, but have you already ran a benchmark just to see if you get the score you're used to? Maybe there is something else going on and this might help identifying which way to look.
    My 2 cents.
    good luck
