I'm looking for a laptop with a similar screen to my old Alienware M18x. I'm looking at the specs for the screen and I'm getting descriptions like these:

    Full HD WLED LCD

1080p Full HD WLED LCD display

    WideFHD (1920x1080) WLED

    WLED WideFHD

    According to this review
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Alienware-M18x-R2-Notebook.77048.0.html

The display panel is a TN display. I just want to make sure it is. I know TN displays have less color accuracy than IPS displays but if my old Alienware M18x had a TN display I'm actually OK with the color inaccuracies (compared to IPS). Thanks.

We can't tell like this, it all depends on the model of the screen in your lapp.

Run AIDA64 Extreme then tell us the screen model. You can also Google that screen model to see if it says anything about TN or IPS

My Alienware 18 has a Samsung LTM184HL01 PLS screen, not IPS. The model number in AIDA Extreme and other utilities don't really match the real model number so I had to take the fron bezel off and turn the screen on its back to see the exact model number. I also calibrated it with my Spyder5PRO and the colors look almost like real life!

    Hey,

    My Alienware m18xR1 has:

    Monitor
    Manufacturer............. Samsung
    Plug and Play ID......... SEC5448
    Data string.............. HGT3J€184HT [*CP437]

    Often known as Samsung 184HT

Quality is superb for me, don't need anything else.

You can also use this program - http://www.entechtaiwan.com/util/moninfo.shtm

As it gives even more detailed data about your display.

If the m18xr2 did have a TN panel I am incredibly impressed with it. Was a beautiful screen.

Actually the tech does not lead to automatically more accurate colours (a lot of the current IPS batch are lower) but the viewing angles are much wider.

I agree. I know that TN displays are faster but have less color accuracy than IPS panels so I'll be really impressed if I find out if the display is a TN panel.

TN panel in M18xR1/R2 is a best of bests TN screens that I saw. Even much better than most of IPS on the market so you won't be dissapointed.

Not less colour accuracy... POTENTIALLY less. And TN has higher potential than most people know them for. It's like a long-lasting stigma. The stigma that all gaming laptops are 3x weaker than a desktop, run hot, have super loud fans, last 5 minutes on battery, burn your legs off and weigh 20 pounds is another one that is still long-lasting. About half of it has been forgotten because of all these superthin machines... that people don't realize exhibit all the heat, fans, burning legs off and throttling issues they think all gaming laptops have XD.
