What ram did u use dude! That is awesome
-
Thanks.
Im still using my Kingston HyperX 1600 mhz ram. -
Man, that's SWEET Brother John.
-
Thanks Brother Fox. Trying to get 12 GB to run now.
-
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
Thats awesome, good luck on getting all 12 gigs working.
-
Thanks Brother Tony.
Now that's another story.... but if i had 1866 ram, it would be super easy. haha
1600 is seriously working at a 550 mhz over clock. -
Honest question here, what's the gain you see in your RAM running at an overclock? Overclocking CPUs and GPUs make a lot of sense, but I've never understood OCing RAM.
-
Price. And a willingness to know the ram i bought 2 years ago is still competing with the ram of today..... Would be my Honest answer... -
I meant in the sense of performance gains.
-
Let me ask you this....Do you see any difference between 1333 and 1600 mhz ram you have now?
As to benching...yes you can actually see it...as to gaming...you would never notice it 95 percent of the time. -
So, was the only thing you needed to do is set the BIOS at 2133 for the RAM, or did you need to adjust memory voltage as well?
-
I wish it was that easy...lol
You need thaiphoon burner. Once set then you can use the settings in the bios. -
Now that is cool, nice job. Good luck on 12GB.
-
Do you need a 2960xm to run it at 2133mhz?
-
I don't think so, but you do need thaiphoon burner, that's for sure.
-
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Question. Can you use the demo version then or do you have to buy the full version of Thaiphoon Burner? - only thinking of off-setting the cost of the software vs the cost of higher clocked ram in the first instance...
-
You have to buy the full version, but it's well worth it. 22 bucks vs hundreds is pretty much a no brainier Brother Stevie.
But I will say this...My 2 gb chips are far easier at getting them above 2133 than my 2 4gb chips. I think i need a better formula for that or the Kingston 4GB just aren't as good as the 2GB are....
All chips are factory 1600 mhz -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
I guess that there are some massive savings to be made by tweaking the cheaper modules for only $22. Great thread btw Bro.....
-
WOW very nice. i love it when new potential arises from the m18x \
/
-
Same here! And to think, all this time it could have been done sooner..
-
Pure speculation: John, is it possible the 4GB has issues overclocking because you are trying to overclock more gigs for the voltage? If you could up the voltage on the ram then you could probably overclock.
-
I'm confident I could bring my 16gb dell 1600mhz ram cas 11 to 1866. straight up because its cas 11 and has 0 problems going from 800/850 with 1.5v.
you inspire me to play around with this toy.
-
I pushed the 2 (8 gigs total) gig sticks of Kingston and Samsung up to 2220+ mhz, while it wont even post pushing 2 4 gig chips, but i can make one post and run by itself....So could be voltage but i up the voltage as well...still no dice..ran a cl15 and it still wouldn't fly. I'll play with it some more later on tonight.
Or edit your own ram up to 1866 and your done. -
Is the program easy to use? Is there a guide for it? When you said flash, does it mean I have to use a separate program to do that? Very temping to turn my 1866mhz to 2133mhz. Thank!
-
They have video guides for it on thier site.
As to ease of use...once you feel comfortable flashing and get a feel for what you need to change..usually just the timings you see in cpuz for the most part....It is, but when you make that first mistake flashing the wrong profile...don't panic.... it can be fixed. -
LOL JOHNKSS HAVE MY BABIES
im at 1866Mhz 931Mhz 9-10-9-28 1.5v
even better than corsair

940Mhz!!!!!
winrar performance is 4891 KB/s!!!! -
congratz!!

Question , do you need to overclock every window reboot? or its permanent?
I was wondering if a 2133 ram oc , what would be the x amount? 2399mhz?
-
its software-permanent. with 2133mhz memory as long as youre not using 1.65v from the get go... 2300mhz should be plausible.
my ram seems to have some kind of auto-rewrite-protection. in other words, i cant change my SPD profiles. i can only "ADD" XMP profiles because theres space there to do so, and there was never one to begin with so no re-write protection was necessary.
there are a lot of problems ive encountered. the program thaiphoon burner is pure genius. im rarely impressed with anything at all. this program actually impressed me. it has a massive database of SPD profiles AND XMP profiles. the list of XMP profiles is small though.
the issue with the XMP profiles seems to be when i change timings or dividers that the whole XMP self-destructs and doesnt allow me to use it. its almost like it has its own internal protection? its really weird.
the profile im using right now is from G.Skill 1600Mhz memory desktop memory. not all xmp profiles seemed to have worked. im looking for a 12-12-12-3x/4x timing so i can break the 1ghz barrier. -
You dont even need to get super high tech with this...just start with your own settings then add the 933 set to yours and read adjust a few things and it will show your own memory and timings....trial and error may be in order, but it will at least read your real memory as is.
-
thats what ive been doing wrong? : /
edit -- i now see space for more profiles "doh"
40/50/60 are all free -
1: Read Memory
2: Click editor
3: DDR3 Speed bins
4: Cas Latency - scroll up and down to add more cas timings or drop cas timings.
5: Set trcd and trp to usually the same as cas.
Now the interesting part...Cas has about 10 to 15 numbers before it goes up to the next class. This is where the playing comes in. If you check that corsair profile...You'll notice it's one click before it would be cl11 (They are not slick! - LOL)
6: Click next and tick Update hex Editir with new SPD data and click apply
7: Click write and write to all SPD devices. (They have to be the same size ram 4g with 4g).
8: Reboot and hope for the best.
Keep at least one extra 4 gig chip just incase you messup flashing. that one chip will default everything to the loewst setting and come back on. then go in the bios and change the 2133 or 1866 down to 1333 and shut down. swap ram and your good. -
im using hyundai ram, maybe thats it?
edit -- spd still not working, still forced to use XMP profiles:

989Mhz 10-11-10-34 4x4GB 16GB total DDR3 (custom modified timings by myself from G.Skill's SniperX XMP profile)

this memory is running circles around my old hyperx 1866
best $22 of my life
<3 JOHNKSSS -
Hmm... makes me wish the M17x R2 wasn't capped at 1333MHz. Though I may just get curious...
-
What did you do with your old hypers??
edit:
Also, i did 6100kb on the winrar test.
-
I sold my hyperx 1866Mhz because I was to receive a replacement m18x with full 16gb 4x4gb 1600mhz. they were really cute pieces of tech but needed 1.55v to hit 973mhz at 11-11-11-xx. i only had a 8gb 2x4gb kit. it cost me $140 O_O.
this ram is SOOOOO much better. all thanks to you.
anddddd ill never be able to beat you in most benchmarks either, your cpu is just too fast.

yeah, i was thinking the cpu was doing a bit more.... so unfair advantage there...
as to your profile...you don't have xmp profiles in it. it should look something like this.Attached Files:
-
-
Here is what I'm using right now. (attached)
Also ignore profile 1, it doesn't work at all. I'm currently using profile 2.
I'm also still tweaking the timings. I might be able to squeeze out a few more MB/s. Ultimately, it's prob not worth my time : p.Attached Files:

here is one of mine...

no problem.
I think they have a setting to remove that protection if it exists..(speculation of course)
ill investigate your memory later today. after i get up.. -
http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m11x/576475-how-update-spd.html
(from what I know write-protection is physical to the RAM)
edit-- getting major BSODs with your settings + looser timings to get 1066Mhz
2nd edit -- ITS NOW REALLY OFFICIAL! -- 2133Mhz 12-12-12-37
timings are really bad but those prior BSODs raped my OS so im playing it carefully.
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2311953
3rd edit -- im catching up -- 1.55v needed for this clock; voltage obviously having its role now
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2311975
who ever said alienware certified memory is crap?

you gotta see this ! validated in the ss
actually it got replaced now because of the crazy cpu freq when i tried to work up the cpu.. kinda funny cpu-z bug lolz

.
the cool thing about it is that i can go even higher
its korean pride day today, i always thought hyundai memory was crap lolz -
Im sure allot of folks thought the same..
