So i went ahead and ordered my M18x... unfortunately... i left the standard 7500 rpm 320gb hard drive and 2630QM processor on the computer. I called back and the reps told me that I would have to cancel.. and at this point it would be a huge hassle. How easy is it for me to go buy a SSD for the OS and install it on this laptop? Additionally, I probably want to upgrade the ram as well. What should I do?

    He is lying.

If you just ordered and its not in production he can easly cancel it.

You do need to wait for the refund yes. If you have enough funds re-order and wait for the refund.

The SSD and RAM upgrade are very easy.

    Damn thats fast.

Ah now you can upgrade to the 2920XM and a SSD.

Search ebay for the 2920XM. Intel and Crucial SSD's are very populair amungs Alienware owners.

I don't feel comfortable upgrading the processor myself.. :( I would unfortunately have to pay someone to come and install it professionally... i wouldn't want to mess it up!

Not everyone is a techie guy. For CPU upgrades, Alienware is owned by Dell now and readily have their service manual available to the general public, it is a good start.

I would rank the upgrading difficulty of the parts like this:

    Easy
    Ram
    Hdd/SSD

    Hard
(Because you need to pry the hindge cover)
    CPU
    GPUs
    Keyboard

    Extra hard
    Motherboard
    DVD/Bluray drive
