Well, I hoped on to BF3 beta early in the morning and ran the game of ultra and 4x AA. I was shocked at the performance. I was getting 40-70fps in game depending on the battle.
below are some screen shots of the game.

NICE! but was this on your desktop or your lappy? If its the lappy, let us know how it does on your desktop as well or vice versa
EDIT: btw, can you switch from your soldier being a right handed shooter to a left handed one..? -
GreaseMonkey90 Notebook Evangelist
not that i know of regarding the hand -
What time did you get your email @ for the beta
-
i am still waiting for my early access email !!
nice fps though! i hope it holds up in 64 player maps! -

thanks for the info man! +rep!

Did you install AMD dedicated driver for BF3? If so, it's not so bad for 6970 Xfire. Good job bro.
Hopefully, GTX 580M SLI can get around 70 fps at max setting. -

Sorry if this question has been answered before but, I have been very busy with my job and unable to keep on this game. Does the beta allow you to play on "max max"? By that I mean max in the beta well be max in the final product. If I remember correctly the bfbc2 beta only let you play on medium but, it was called max. Also was that with dx11? Thank you in advance!
-
some people complained that low to ultra produced the same fps on their systems but they have to restart the game to take effect. -
Did you notice any tearing in game? I thought the performance was really good too (MUCH better than was I saw in the Alpha release), but I saw a bit of tearing every now and again.
-
-
there shouldnt be any tearing if VSYNC is on. Tearing happens only when your framerate goes above your monitors refresh rate
-
Maybe I'm using the wrong term. Screen flickers with what appear to be "tears" in the graphics.
On another note, I'm trying to install the AMD 11.10 preview drivers but it isn't installing a display driver. Anyone else seeing this? -
Lol .... ok this looks awesome.... and this is only with 6970s ?
Kinda crazy but I am just musing here ... whats teh point of a desktop anymore ? I mean, other than price (and really Laptop prices are just inflated) If the 6970s are crushing the new Frostbite engine ... we are sitting pretty for some time to come ... who even needs the 7K series ... I imagine the FB2 engine will be used for the next few years anyway ... no ?
Nice job on the early report +rep ! -
try this one:

ok sorry for the double post. the above one was getting crowded. so yes ARGH was right. i have to change restart the game. well the fps fell like 20-ish. below are the screenshot. hope fully 11.10 drivers could boost its performance.
-
I cant install the 11.10 drivers. I also can't get the damn beta to go fullscreen for some reason
-
Shaden to answer your questions about desktops; the use for them is smaller but the price is still way cheaper and you can run much higher FPS AND framerates for sweet multimonitor setups. The ability to upgrade is much easier. Plus, as you and many other benchers are trying to get the highest 3dmark11/Vantage scores, it is that much more competitive on the desktop front. If i were younger and on a tighter budget I would still buy a desktop (still may in the future). Anyways, OP, thanks for the awesome screen shots. My assumption was correct in that this game would run MUCH smoother than Crysis 2. Can't wait to see how this game performs with driver improvement. It does appear that 6970's will be minimum to play on max settings for multiplayer. The singleplayer I would imagine to run buttery smooth!
-
Wow. Not freaking bad.
2x6990m. 2620qm.
Ultra 1080 2xaa 2xaf. Outside - did not drop below 50fps once. Inside - did not drop below 65 fps.
I know "ultra" might not really be ultra in this beta - but damn.....it looks pretty amazing. Was starting to regret spending 2k on a laptop...........but now.......being able to play BF3 on the couch while watching TV in the living room.......priceless. -
-
I tried the 11.10 drivers (via the download inap provided) and found them to be less stable than 11.8 CAP4. Uninstalled and reinstalled my old drivers. I'm sure they'll be great, but I'm going to wait until they're certified and all that.

Like I mentioned elsewhere 6970Ms and above it should be very playable at Ultra setting bar some crazy AA settings. From the looks of things 8xAA maybe tough.
For productivity and development any laptop is just pants. No one does heavy simulations on a laptop we do it on workstations built for this purpose. I do matlab simulations, run many other VLSI development tools. And I am not satisfied with any laptop including my M18X. Far from it. I do it on a desktop/workstation. The same goes for some serious video/audio production, 3D tools, design automation development etc laptops don't cut it. Gaming on a laptop is a very small minority. Gaming performance is not an indicator of a system's worth in computing sector.
Laptops are not going to match Desktops at any level unless something miraculous is found in terms of Chip tech that results in no heat plus power requirements that are not in the region of 400 watts and above (most serious desktops and workstations are)

Ok these drivers bench very high. Stock 6970s with a 2720 as reviewed on techreview bench around 20400ish on Vantage. I just ran the bench stock and got 21400. That is a GIANT increase. However the drivers don't seem right. HWinfo does NOT recognize a second GPU and the "Enable CrossfireX" in the CCC is not functional. However, I am going to test some other games. IF they are stable I will just leave the drivers as is. If not, then reinstall 11.8 as the previous poster did. However, that stock Vantage run blew me away. I am going to try an OC'ed version as my best was around 23,500.

ok i am finally in the beta after 12 hours waiting for stupid key.
everything is set to ultra but i took the AA down to 2x and with 11 vs. 11 game i get about 60fps outside and way more than that in the tunnel.
2720qm
6990m xfire @ 825 core.
1080p
and yes this is with a restart of the game to ensure settings took effect. -
-
i am about to post a youtube video of a play session to show m18x 6990m xfire performance. should be up in a few mins.
-
BF3 beta m18x fps test - YouTube
alienware m18x BF3 benchmarked!
ultra settings with 2x AA @ 1080p
2720qm, 6990M xfire @ 825 core / 1000 mem
just showing the FPS readings in the beta.
11.10 beta drivers.
in-game settings shown at about 3 mins.
FRAPS on upper left hand corner.
you might see some graphical glitches and players clipping through floor. beta won't allow the mouse buttons to be keybound so it was dificult to adjust since i am a lefty.
only real issue i see is that the frame output is not as smooth as it should be when fps dips below 40 or so. hopefully this gets cleared up by time of release. -
On my M18x:
Battlefield 3 Beta on Alienware M18x Ultra Part I - YouTube
and
Battlefield 3 Beta on Alienware M18x Ultra Part II - YouTube
Don't forget to choose 1080P -
-
how is your gameplay outside of tunnel? -
-
I've noticed the weird glitches, particularly outside. That's also where the "tearing" I mentioned before occurs the most.
Just for sanity's sake, those of you running the 11.10 beta drivers, did you have to download the custom one inap linked or are you able to get the package from AMD installed? -
Dont have beta yet, but the drivers from the AMD page istalled all hunky dory....
-
Well judging from the youtube of the m18x with 6990's it seems like this game MAY struggle with the 6970's (which I have)..unless I OC. Grrr. I am somewhat regretting not waiting a few months and getting the m18x off the outlet (didn't think they would hit so fast at those prices). I can't justify upgrading to those however as the price/performance difference isn't going to be worth it. I guess this game will have to be OC'ed unless they really smooth out the final version. Thanks for posting the vids though.

EDIT: IF YOU ARE READING THIS LINE, THE GAME ALREADY CAME OUT!
So as most of us already know, by tomorrow the beta for Battlefield 3 will be opened to the public (w00t!).
So i would like for the community of us M18x'ers to post some specs and pics on what frame rates you are getting on the highest settings (meaning everything on max, which means the you will have to make it a custom setting) once the game comes out tomorrow for beta.
Im looking for a few specific things such as:
Frame rates on both the 580's in SLI as well as the 6990's in Xfire, what drivers are you using (11.10 for AMD, and 285.38 for Nvidia), and preferably stock clocks (no OC'ing).
what do you get out of it?
1. my undying respect (and maybe some rep for helpin me out)
2. get to play an AMAZING game
if you need any more info from me, post it up and ill be glad to oblige.
please let me know guys as this will greatly help me out. Cheers!
EDIT: Also, let me know what CPU you have because i do want to know if it does make a noticable difference. (and, if anyone has time tomorrow for this, play it for about an hour or more and see how the lappy handles long-term in terms of heat, PSU, any other problems that may arise). -
Yup you have my word I will post results mate
-
So where can I get the beta? I pre-ordered the game at gamestop but either my store is clueless or there is no beta invite for pre-ordering.

FYI, as a follow-up to my earlier posts, I decided to try 11.10 one last time. This time though, I remembered to uninstall all the CAPs as well as the drivers (I'd be uninstalling the drivers and driver sweeping in safe mode but forgot to remove the CAPs). After that, I was able to successfully get the drivers installed. I am not seeing a HUGE increase in performance, but things seem to run smoothly enough with them.
Lesson here: make sure to remove the CAPs and drivers, not just the drivers -
wow......Holy mother of god......caspian border......
Did not drop below 35FPS on ultra.........steady 40-60 fps running around with a FULL 63 other players.......sh*t flying everywhere, smoke, fire, you name it......
This game is going to be EPIC. I simply cannot believe that I am getting this amount of performance out of this machine. I REALLY want to see some CPU comparisons to see if BF3 does better with an XM cause I am so freaking impressed with how well a tiny 2620qm does. -
Wait...how did you get into a Caspian Border map?
-
is to password for US caspian servers -
Nice! Thanks for that!
-
ok guys lets hold the party. crossfire scaling is terrible in 64 player caspian border. oftentimes when zooming in the fps dips in half. but the worst part is that whenever the fps goes below 60 there is insane stutter with crossfire. i disabled it and running the game butter smooth averaging 30 fps so all is well.

Anybody have extra beta?
